other freestanding rigs

Posted by lance_ryley (lance_ryley@…>)

The other day I posted that there was a Tanton 43 at Constitution
Marina. After doing some research, it appears this is not the case.
The tanton cat-ketches have rounded sterns, almost canoe sterns. The
one at Constitution has a flat stern (like a nonsuch) with a teak swim
platform on it. The masts are aluminum, apparently made in three parts
and bolted together. It’s got wishbones. It looks to be somewhere
between 42 and 45 feet long. It’s very beamy and has a lot of
freeboard. Anyone have any ideas what other Cat Ketch this might be? I
know the Herreshoff Cat Ketch Company made some of various sizes for a
while, but I can’t find any pictures or drawings.

Any ideas from the learned masses?

I saw something similar last summer in New England but it was aluminum and I believe hard chined so not a production boat.

This one is definitely glass, and it hails from Newport RI…
Unfortunately they’re not liveaboards so I can’t invite myself over
for their story

Could it be a Wylie Cat? I know they’re building new ones of that
size. I thought they had carbon fiber masts, however.

I seem to remember that just before the Nonsuch production ended,
there was a large ketch being touted by them in Soundings. I don’t
have any more info other than this vague recollection. Herm

Thanks, Al. I looked her up and according to the HIN, it’s a Tanzer,
which I find hard to believe. The record has the right length for
the vessel, but … I can’t find any references to a 40’ Tanzer Cat
Ketch. after consulting with my grizzled ol’ dad, we’ve come to the
conclusion that this may be a halsey herreshoff cat ketch, though
the largest one I can find reference to is 33 or 35, and this is
definitely an “honest” 40.

Thanks for the reference though Al - very useful. couple that with
the link http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm to look
up manufacturing codes, and you have a great set of tools.

I thought about that, John, but the tantons have a ‘canoe’ stern,
and this has a flat transom. It does look a bit like a Nonsuch, now
that that’s been brought up, but I can’t find any references to a
design.

The other day I posted that there was a Tanton 43 at
Constitution
Marina. After doing some research, it appears this is not
the
case.
The tanton cat-ketches have rounded sterns, almost canoe
sterns.
The
one at Constitution has a flat stern (like a nonsuch) with
a
teak swim
platform on it. The masts are aluminum, apparently made in
three
parts
and bolted together. It’s got wishbones. It looks to be
somewhere
between 42 and 45 feet long. It’s very beamy and has a lot
of
freeboard. Anyone have any ideas what other Cat Ketch this
might
be? I
know the Herreshoff Cat Ketch Company made some of various
sizes
for a
while, but I can’t find any pictures or drawings.

Any ideas from the learned masses?

Lance,
Perhaps it is a two-masted Nonsuch, I’ve seen photo’s of one
advertised, so I suppose a few Nonsuch ketches have been built. Your
description fits to the Mark Ellis design.

Go to www.nonsuch.org
open the pictures folder and look at the Nonsuch 36 ketch. Perhaps
there was a 40 foot katch as well.

The Cat Ketch Corporation also built an H45, maybe this is what you are referring to. They made an h-27, h-38, H-31 and the h45. Some were cold molded with mahogany plies and then fiberglass cored with airex.
This info is out of the practical sailor.

I saw a boat in Belize that I was told was a Freedom, but I’ve never
seen one like it. Here are 2 links to photos of it:

Hi, ALL,

Bruce Kirby from my hometown, Ottawa, ON, Can, known best from his Laser design, designed a " better " Nonsuch at 34 + feet. It has an aft platform and is a centerboarder. Three were built, one in Hamilton, and it was destroyed in hurricane Floyd when a Haitian fishing boat draged its excused for an anchor thru Marh Harbour, a second in Ottawa went to the Bahamas and then the rig was changed to a non-freestanding sloop for a claimed better performance, and the third is owned by a retired dentist in Picton, On. near the Thousand Islands. These boats had a large rear platform at deck level to handle the mizzen. These boats had alloy masts and are ( were ) too flexible. Built in two sections these had problems at the join as well as some Nonsuch masts.

Lance,

I believe you are correct. Somehow I vaguely remember a Herreschoff designed cat ketch at 45 feet , that were cold molded in Costa Rica.

Jerome, others might disagree with you:

The boat that I saw was in St. George’s Cay in northern Belize. I
was told that it was a Freedom, and here’s what Dave Balfour who
used to work for Freedom said about it.

“It strongly resembles an early Freedom 44 and would be willing to
say that is what it is as long as it is a fiberglass hull – could
be a British built Freedom Isle of Man boat.”

Hey guys, I just discovered a picture of a pilothouse ketch with
freestanding wishbone booms on page 628 of the 2005 West Marine
Master Catalog. Unfortunately, there’s no attribution or explanation
of the boat.

The tanton cat-ketches have rounded sterns, almost canoe sterns.
The
one at Constitution has a flat stern (like a nonsuch) with a
teak swim
platform on it. The masts are aluminum, apparently made in three
parts
and bolted together. It’s got wishbones. It looks to be
somewhere
between 42 and 45 feet long. It’s very beamy and has a lot of
freeboard. Anyone have any ideas what other Cat Ketch this might
be? I
know the Herreshoff Cat Ketch Company made some of various sizes
for a
while, but I can’t find any pictures or drawings.

Any ideas from the learned masses?
