I would like to replace my outhaul line. I measured what came out of the boom-26’ and wondered how much was in the boom. I have also looked at my spec sheets and it seems that there is a pully system inside the boom, is that correct? Has anyone done this. On my F-33 I changed the reef and outhaul
lines. Your method should work but I’m glad I disassembled my boom. Some
of the blocks needed replacing and there was some junk (animal or bird nest
stuff) in the boom that added friction. If the outhaul doesn’t seem to
have much friction (including when the reefing lines are tensioned and I was
just replacing the outhaul I’d probably do it your way as long as the
line diameters was the same or smaller (the blocks on mine were quite small).

I think there is 3:1 or 4:1 purchase inside the boom. I don’t think reeving thought the new line using the old line as massager will work. Your up for removing the end cap. and pulling the blocks out.

There should be screws on the side to remove the endcap.
If not and it is one piece at the outboard end, then you have to remove the sheaves and work it that way.

I seem to recall screws that I had to
remove on my F-33 isomats and then the end cap slides out (unless there’s
corrosion).

I replaced the outhaul on both the main and mizzen on Bright Star and
was a little confounded by what I found. First, I could unscrew the
endcap, but the front end of the boom was riveted in. It used 1/4"
rivets, which are about the largest you can buy a hand tool for, which
I did (around $70). Inside, I found what I thought was an odd setup,
which I cannot describe and couldn’t find a duplicate setup. In
essence, though, it had one more set of blocks than I was expecting to
find, anchored to a bail near the front of the boom internally. If
memory serves, essentially both a fiddle block on a wire pennant and a
piece of line were anchored to the bail, and that line went out and
through a block and back to a becket on the second fiddle block. The
outhaul pennant was attached to the becket on the second block, and the
control line looped through both fiddle blocks and back to the cockpit.
Truly a bizarre setup.
I found the blocks to be undersized, and I probably overkilled with the
size of the garhauer blocks I put in there. I ended up deciding to take
the whole boom apart so that I could get everything out of it, re-run
the reefing as well as the outhaul lines, and to visualize the purchase
on this whole thing. The hardest part was drilling out the old rivets
without enlarging the holes in the boom or the gooseneck fitting.
Actually, the hardest part may have been getting the boom vang back
together, but that’s another story.
