Purchasing Freedom 30

Posted by s_a_i_l (s_a_i_l@…>)

I am in the process of making an offer on a Freedom 30. Assuming
the seller and I come to an agreement, is there anything I should be
aware of when having the survey done? Also, I plan to purchase a
new set of sails. This boat will be used for coastal cruising. Any
tips on the sails. Thanks! I am sure I will have a ton of
questions!

Steve Haarstick of Haarsticksailmakers.com made the original Freedom sails and makes fine sails!

I would also mention that Doug Pope of Pope Sails and Rigging in
Rockland, Maine worked with Haarstick on the original Freedom sails
and is an excellent sailmaker in his own right. It would be worth
getting a quote from him. I believe his loft has a website at
www.popesails.com

Hi Bill,

I have a f-30 (1987). What questions do you have? Where if the boat you are looking at located? Has it been privately owned, or was it a charter boat?

A couple of questions were regrading the sole, ventilation and the
ports/hatches. The sole is soft in several places and looks like it
needs to be replaced. Is this common or does it indicate a possible
problem. There is evidence that some of the ports leak and it looks
like the gaskets have not been replaced at least for a while. Are
they available d easy to replace? Finally, the vents in the hatches
do not work. What have people found works best for ventilating the
boat when closed up?

I guess the most important thing to check is for soft spots around
the thruhulls. I don’t know if they have been rebedded or not.
Thanks for the tips.

The teak and holly sole on my 30 is solid and not soft anywhere. I would not consider the condition you describe as “common.” My guess would be that the sole got wet somehow, and possibly more than once. That would concern me. If the sole got wet the boards suporting the sole likely were wet as well.

The ports on the Freedom will begin to leak. Mine leak when I’m washing down the deck and a future maintenance item for me is to try to find new seals for all the ports. My F-30 was built in 1987. The ports are aluminum. I’ve seen later Freedom models with higher quality ports.

The fixed windows on Freedom cabins also have a tendency to oxidize and become opaque, as well as a tendency to begin leaking with age. Fixing this problem is a complicated job, particularly on the F-30 as the aft window on the starboard side is bisected by a bulkhead. The aluminum frames for these windows have to be removed from the inside and the bulkhead presents an obsticle for removing the frame on the starboard side. The windows can be replaced and re-sealed, but it requires a lot of work.

For ventilation on my boat, I leave the overhead hatch in the head open, prop the head door open with a throw pillow and open the port in the aft cabin next to the companionway. This allows air to flow-through the cabin for ventilation. If water comes into the head it drips onto the shower floor and is removed by the shower pump. The port in the aft cabin is protected by the dodger and no water enters the cabin through this port. My F-30 is in California where it does not rain very often. I’m not sure how this would work in Florida where it would be raining every day certain times of the year.

Check the headliner for sagging. Headliner may need to be replaced.

The only unusual cabin sole problems on my f30 are near the base of
the mast were moisture collected caused by a clogged limber hole, and
right at the settees on each side there is some flex. I have not
investigated the flex too much since it is slight, but I suspect it
is more a design problem than a failure. The board covering storage
under the after berth also sags from insufficient support…a design
issue.

One possibility for a soft sole is off season precipitation finding
its way inside. If the boat is uncovered, wind can drive rain into
the companionway or snow can melt and leak in. The water then sits
there all off season until someone comes looking in spring. This is
of course a New England scenario. My 30 has an external bilge plug
that I remove in the off season to avoid just that problem should
something go wrong with the cover etc.

Unscrew the floorboards and take a look. Floorboards can be
replaced, rotting glassed in supports is getting more complicated.
Water finding its way into the core from the inside at small cracks
or a seam is a real pain of course
