We are planning an 8-day sail around the Cape and Islands. Remembering that the
fog
can be a factor this time of year in the Northeast, I would like to find a
suitable radar
deflector before making the trip. Any advice / recommendations about what type
to
purchase and where to mount on a Freedom 30 would be appreciated.
Thanks…

Deflector
Reflector
Good idea. I just mounted my Davis radar reflector under my radar unit. If
using the Davis type reflector make sure that it is oriented in the “catch
rain” position. Looking at the reflector from the side you should be
looking into a corner from any direction not onto a flat plate. The “catch
rain” term is used because this orientation will result in a corner pointing
up such that it would catch rain in the pocket formed by the plates of the
reflector.
The Davis reflector produces a good return, I have no experience with other
types.

William is correct regarding the Davis radar reflector. However, I
prefer it elevated as high as possible. I have a flag halyard that
runs from a block attached to the masthead truck to my bow pulpit.
The radar reflector is carried there below the mast head and above
the jib stay. It is out of the way and does not bang against the
mast.

I, too, have a Freedom 30 to which I’d like to attach a radar
deflector. I don’t have a flag halyard on my mast and, I’m afraid
to confess, I don’t even know what a masthead “truck” is. Macks011,
is yours an F-30?
Speaking of mastheads, yesterday my son claimed the honor of being
the first to go to the top of ours to take some digital photos so I
could plan how to install the new wind transducer. We discovered,
to our surprise, that we have quite a sturdy U bolt attached to the
rear of the top plate, which would easily bear a block for a spare
halyard (and maybe a small block for a flag halyard). I’d be happy
to post some digital photos if there’s any interest.

My mast too has the u-bolt you refer to and that is where my flag halyard is
attached. The halyard’s other end is tied off to the bow rail as suggested
on this list some time ago. I don’t see a purpose for another halyard at
that point.

I’m a belt and suspenders kind of guy, so I’d like two halyards
attached as I go up the mast. Also, if I have to go up the mast
because the main is stuck up there, how do I get up without a spare
halyard?
