Re Adding an autopilot on a F-21

Posted by Nick Marino (blueraven1@…>)

Bill,
I have an Autohelm 1000 which I use when raising or lowering my main
when I singlehand. I also do singlehand cruising and use it a lot.
To avoid current drain on stand-by, I have a ON/OFF switch in the
cockpit.

Did you mount the cup on the seat? If so how did you
compensate for the lip on the seat? Also do you have
the reefing lines hooked up. I have a real problem
raising the main. I have to keep pulling out the
reefing lines out aft end of the boom to get the main
up.

Bill, regarding the reefing lines, I have the same problem on my F-30. If you play out some slack before you begin to raise the main, it helps quite a bit-just make sure they don’t catch on a table or something in the cockpit. As you raise the main, you can see the slack get taken up. If you have a rope clutch, just close it for a moment and free some more reefing line slack. If you don’t have clutches, wrap the main halyard around a winch while workings on the reefs.
Also make sure your main sheet line is free, even a bit off dead to the wind can make it very difficult to raise if the sheet is tight.

I’m wondering if I change the reefing line to a high-tec 1/4" line from the 5/16" line would help.
It might make it easier to get thru all the blocks and curves.kholden@… wrote:

I don’t know whether the reefing lines are rigged the same on the F21 as on my F30, but I had similar problems with my reefing lines until I discovered just how much junk can accumulate in a hollow boom. I pulled the lines out the aft end as far as they’d go and cleaned out all manner of junk, including birds nests. Then I put a hose in as far as it would go and and shot water through until it no longer ran out brown (helps to have the boom amidships at this point). I also changed the reefing blocks at the base of the mast. Problem solved.

For my Autohelm 1000 they offer a option of a pipe like fitting that
I mounted on the vertical backrest which allows connection of the
autopilot. Your autopilot should have a simmilar option.

With regards to reefing lines, I do not pull them in but simply
gather and stuff them in folds of the sail before putting on the
sail cover.

Bill,
The equivalent Simrad installation hardware are a “Cantilever
Bracket” and “Tiller Bracket” you can get from where you purchased
your TP10 Autopilot.

I took apart my booms and found not only nests and other junk but tangled lines and blocks needing replacement. I changed the lines and the block arrangements in some cases amd most of the friction is gone. In addition I taped over the ends of my booms (ISOMATS with open ends) but left a few drain holes and figure this will prevent wildlife in the booms going forward.
