Re: bottom paint removal

We soda blasted our F30 last fall and like the results…for the most part. The results in almost all areas was perfect…leaving the bottom with a smooth, fine haze finish…similar to sanding with 180 pape and no damage… We were very concerned about damaging the vinylester bottom gel coat on our boat (which should keep the bottom blister free for many more years). There was a slight uneveness to the process…and there were a few “digs”…about the size of a silver dollar caused by the operator stalling on one spot for too long. All of these was smoothed out by a obital sanding of the bottom with 180 which left the boat looking new (my wife, god bless her, was the bottom sander). Soda blasting is an art… and requires experience and a very careful operator. While it is not nearly as agreesive as sand blasting… it can still do some light damage in the wrong hands. It is also an incredibly messy process which requires
a complete tenting of the boat below the toe rail, all the way to the ground cover. All of the waste has to be cleaned up and bagged…which is a big job. I can send pictures of the process if you want. Fargo F30#12 NARISA Norm Friberg <nfriberg@…> wrote: If it’s the ablative kind of bottom paint, I would think that pressure-washing whould do it. These machines, used incorrectly, can destroy wood, so I think that if you find the right settings and
nozzle, they would work on just about any paint. I expect that about three seconds with a pressure washer would be the equivalent of two seasons of cruising, in terms of ablation of paint. Around here (NY/NJ) this is how they remove the barnacles. You can rent the machines for a few bucks a day. Good luck!
