Re: Deal on Sails / Dealing with Delivery

Posted by Sean Mulligan (quadmulligan@…>)

Hi - Today I received a quote via mail from Lee that was a bit
different than yours:

$1,350. shipped (5.93 oz.; no battens) minus a $75 “Discount” if
ordered by 4/15. Your quote seems to be for lighter cloth (5.0 oz.)
That should be OK, but I like the talk about the “High Modulus
Sailcloth.”

We have been dealing with all the hassels of taking delivery of
Emmylou in early May:

  • Survey - went well, though we were advised to have the gooseneck
reworked with larger poprivets. And the surveyor needs to return
when she is hauled for delivery
  • Mast removal - current yard has not been able to free mast from
poured Spartite collar. We had hoped it was greased good enought to
release and could be reused. If we have to destroy and redo figure
$250 or so (plus a week to cure).
  • dickering with marine transport company on fees, responsibilities,
timing, protection. Seems we will have to make another trip down to
Deale, MD end of April to handle all this and take some more stuff
off the boat and bring bubble wrap for the mast, etc.
  • finding a yard here in CT that will take delivery and put it on
stands for a week or so to allow us to wax hull and do some work
before splashing (add windex, fix lights, apply numbers). The yard I
visited today was crazy busy (as all yards are at this time of year)
and they weren’t keen on accepting the delivery except at noon
(lunchtime?) and then, for $250. ($12./ft.) they will pick the boat,
drop in the water and send us on our way to put her together
    somewhere else.

So, although #307 could sure use a new main, there are a lot of
other $$ consuming items to handle first. Now I wish we had gotten a
trailer! Anyone have any ideas / been down this road before? We
could use some encouragement…

Hi All,

Do you need a new main sail? If you do, this may be a good deal for
you and for me. Lee Sails has offered us the following discount if
we buy multiple sails at the same time.

Read the quote below and contact me if you are interested in
purchasing a main sail. By the way, if you know of a better price,
tell me about that as well.

If you are interested, we can work out the details with the supplier.

Thanks,

Max

Sean and Vivian,

Welcome to the world of boating. I am an inexperienced sailor, but
well read. What I have read suggests that the frustrations that you
are encountering are typical. Patience seems to be an important
aspect of boat culture.

I have my boat on a trailer and it needs ant-fouling paint on the
hull and everyone tells me that I should do it myself because it is
easy. However, they haven’t told me how to levitate my boat above
the trailer to apply to the paint. My local boatyard charges $21
foot to apply the anti-fouling paint. What they want to do is to
lift the boat off the trailer with a crane and straps late in the
day, paint what they can and paint the remaining area the following
morning early and then put the boat back on the trailer. The boat
yard is launching 35 boats a day at this time of year. I should
have done this last month or last fall. Live and learn.

Boat trailers cost about $1,400 and are almost impossible to obtain
used, I’m told. However, I have heard of trailers being temporarily
modified to carry a boat.

Sailing the boat home may become a more desirable solution after
all. That would buy you time, give you a chance to do some serious
sailing, and meet with people at different boatyard ports along the
way. Who knows, you might find a boatyard enroute that could do
most of the work for you.

I need much of the same work that you describe on my boat and I am
sending out emails to everyone I know to find a boat
handyman/mechanic that I can work with. One of the methods that has
worked well for me to actually go to boatyards and talk with
people. Telephone and emails don’t seem to work as well.

Although I intend to expend a great deal of energy and time to
getting my boat in condition to sail this season, I wouldn’t be
surprised if it doesn’t get launched this year.

Patience.

Max
