I should have mentioned that my golden retriever will be nearly 12 this summer when I bring him on the boat for first time, hence my apprehension. He still hikes with me daily, but he is not as agile as he once was, and sometimes he balks at jumps or stairs. But, that said, I am encouraged by the responses from all of you who routinely take your dog on boat and seem to manage just fine.
Thanks,
Michael Katz

Your mail surprises me…sorry but…how much experience have you had with dogs?
Have you ever seen them acting playing chasing, hunting etc.
let me reassure you that he will not have any problems either jumping on board, going down or up the steps and for that matter most anything that you are half concerned about…
my dog, an Spanish water dog, even climbs trees!..moderately naturally…
don’t forget that your dog is an animal not a child needing training ( 75 Lbs ) or a disable person needing walking sticks or extra care
good luck

I am planning on bringing my dog on my Freedom 38 for first time next summer. He is a 75 lb Golden Retriever. I am thinking of buying one of those telescoping (40" to 70") dog ramps to get him on board, but am wondering how I will get him down the companionway ladder. (The F38 companionway is off-center and comes into boat in galley area, leaving little room to angle a ramp.)
Anyone have experience with this? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Michael Katz

I agree with all the comments here. We have a 7yr old very tall 120lb
Yellow Lab (small horse) named Teddy Bear. Our Freedom 35 was bought for
the dog. We drove our broker nuts as we searched for over 2yrs to find a
Teddy friendly boat. Teddy manuvers very well on the boat. The biggest
problem is a dog’s natural instinct to extend their claws when they want
traction. On the fiberglass decks, this works like ice skates. After a
while they lean to keep their claws in for more traction on the non-skid.
Teddy fell in the first year that we had the boat. He fell off the dock
when he tried to jump to the boat before my wife could pull the boat in.
The deck was wet from being washed and in he went (his first time in the
water). Once he came to the surface, I called him to the stern and he
actually climbed the swim ladder onto the swim platform. A couple of weeks
before we decided to have him begin wearing a harness, instead of just a
collar, when on the boat. I would strongly recommend the harness. If you
do need to help them, its easier with a harness and it seems to give them
more confidence.
