Re: F21 outboard size recommendations

Hi - had this problem myself a while ago and we ended up staying with the 2 stroke - really light weight wise and although they are phasing them out, the parts will be around for ages yet although I don’t know about the emissions legislation in the US - it’s ok here.
Good luck

I use a tohatsu 4hp 4 stroke on my F21 no problems and tons of power. Also, very quiet.

The weight has not been a real issue.

Hey all,
I’m looking for advise on a new outboard for WindRush (F21DK Cat).
I’d like to go as small as I can (40lbs or less) and go 4stroke,
this way I could also use the motor on a dingy.
From what I’ve seen so far this would limit me to the Honda 2hp or
the Yamaha 2.5hp. I’m more inclined to go with the Honda due it’s
being air cooled.
What do you all think, would this be enough hp to do the job safely?
I do most of my sailing on lakes with an occasional trip off shore.
This last summer a group of us from the Rio Grande Sailing Club
(www.RGSC.org) took a week trip to Santa Catalina.
One of the boats (J24) used a Honda 2hp without any problems.
Granted the most wind we saw while motoring was a 15kt breeze dead in
our face going into the Isthmus anchorage.

Thanks for any advice

I’ve got a 4-hp 2-cycle Evinrude. Bought it used for $150. Runs great. The more you run it the better it goes. I’d guess the weight at 30 lbs. I’m surprised you’ve got enough water out there in New Mexico to sail.

Hi Charlie. I use a Honda 2hp 4stroke on my F21DK. 28 pounds. I
mostly race club races within 5-12 miles from the mouth of our
harbor on Mobile Bay, and do no cruising; so weight was a primary
cosideration in my choice. With one crew member our speed is 4.3mph
against wind of 0-7 knots and light chop. By myself it is 4.6mph.
With wind of 8-12 knots and moderate waves, 3.8mph. Wind of 13-17
knots, and breaking waves, 2.5-2.8mph. We do not have a really
strong current on the Bay, including going into the harbor. The
Honda 2hp 4stroke has very strong thrust and power for a 2hp engine.
I like the air cooling, but it makes the motor noisy for a 4 stroke,
if that matters to you. Have to be careful with the first pull of
the starting rope, because of high compression and “backlash” (I’m
sure that’s not the right word, but you know what I mean). If I got
caught in one of our frequent violent thunderstorms, I’d probably
drop the sails, and anchor and ride it out, rather than trying to
motor through it; actually, I’d probably just reef and sail through
it. If you’re a local racer and a good sailor, the Honda 2hp 4stroke
is fine. If you’re a cruiser, family sailor, and/or a beginner, or
need to motor through strong currents, a stronger motor is advisable
(Charlie, I know you are a racer and good sailor!!). Also, the Honda
holds only apx 1/2 gallon of gas in the internal tank–so refueling
could be a problem while motoring over 10 miles, especilally if you
have to refuel in strong winds, waves, and/or rain. Hope this helps.
