Correction. I have a Max-prop 3 blade feathering prop. Not a Martec
folding prop…

The pitch on the Max-prop is defintely adjustable. I downloaded the
installation instructions from PYI and it seems pretty straight
forward. Anyone ever done it?

Posted by Herman and Gail Schiller (hschiller2@…>)

I’ve done it for a 2-blade Max-Prop and other than following
instructions there’s not much to it. Lubriplate has the correct
grease for Max-Prop, and you can order it via the Internet. Use lotsa
grease to fully fill the hub. Also, have someone else to help you
assemble the thing, I felt that I needed to be that 8-armed Indian
Goddess to assemble the thing. Oh, and bring along a card table to
place under this thing in case one of the well-greased parts slips
out of your hands. Herm

I have a max-prop on my 1994 F35. Mine is the older classic, which can be a
little tricky to set. The classic requires taking the prop apart. I’ve
been told that it is good practice to place something under the prop so you
won’t loose any small pieces and to have a second pair of hands when you set
the blades. The newer models are supposed to be easier to set. I think
mine is set at 18 degrees. A lower setting will increase the RPM.

Jay,

What kind of cruising speed are you seeing under power with your 3-
blade Max-prop?

My F35 is a 1993 with the classic Max-prop. If you happened to have
documented the pitch setting and know exactly what it is, I’d be
interested to know to compare with how mine is set.

Originally mine was set at 20 degrees. The year before I bought “Sketch” it
was set back to 18 degrees. I run at about 2800 RPM at full throttle, which
I think is about right for the 3GM. Boat speed is somewhere around 6+ knots
depending on wind conditions and how clean the bottom is. You can tell if
you have the 35 at hull speed because you start burying the swim platform.
I never cruise a full throttle. I usually run just over 2000 RPM which has
water just lapping over the swim platform and I cruise at about 5.5 knots.

To add to confusion in this discussion. We have the fixed 2-blade
prop that came with our F35. So long as it is clean (we now used
zinc-based paint in the spring), we are able to achieve 6+ knots at
2800 rpm through out the season (depending on wind and current). This
is from GPS readings not the BG knot meter, which is misbehaving at
the moment.

SO! What are your sailing speeds at 15 knots true. We see 5.5 Knots
upwind, 7+ on a reach and 5.5 knots wing-on-wing. I debate about the
value of a Max or Kiwi 3-blade but I have not heard much to convince
me yet. I have strong positive control under power

I agree. I have the 2 bladed fixed prop on my F32 and find I get good results.
I can’t see the advantage of changing props.

I’d be interested to know which zinc-based paint you are using on
your prop and where you keep your F35. I am in Narragansette Bay, RI
and I really struggle with keeping the prop clean. I’ve not found
anything affective at fighthing the growth and rely on manually
cleaning the prop. Which is no fun this time of year (burrr!)

Jay,

Good info, thanks.

I don’t know, 2800 RPM at full throttle seems really low for the
3GM30. I was told by a reputable mechanic that the 3GM30 should be
running at 3400 RPM at full throttle. Cruising RPMs should be around
2800 to 2900. It must have been much lower when you had the pitch set
at 20 degrees.

I used Pettit zinc spray " antifouling" paint at the end of April
2007, and launched the boat into relatively warm, brackish water
present in the “Inner Banks” of North Carolina. By the end of August
I had enough barnacles living on my shaft and prop to cause
vibration, and limiting the engine RPM to about 2200 at max throttle
(and severely limiting speed under power). Caveat Emptor! Herm

I put Speed Prop on my Kiwi prop, shaft
and strut. The boat sat for over two months in the Chesapeake and I just
checked and there are no barnacles only the grassy growth. Speed Prop is
expensive but folks in out marina have been having a lot of success with it.

I just took my boat our after having it sit for about 1 month in the upper Chesapeake, and can’t get above 2000 rpm either. I am assuming growth on the prop and shaft…

Just heard that several members of our yacht club are going to paint their prop and shafts with wax for next year…

Several members have said they did it this year and had no growth.

Any ever hear of this?

I will double check the manual when I get back down to the boat, but I’m
pretty sure that’s what I was looking for when I originally did the sea
trial.

Fred,

I did a Google search on “Speed Prop” and could not find any products
that matched. I did get a hit on a product called “Propspeed”
(http://www.propspeed.com/). Is this what you used?

In order to apply this stuff, did you have to strip of all existing
paint from the prop and shaft and get it back down to bare metal?

Paul

Posted by fredmolden@…> (fredmolden@…>)

Oops, my bad or my dyslexia. Prop Speed is
the correct name. Yes, I used a 60 grit paper to take it down to
metal. I removed all old paint and barnacles from the shaft and strut.
I put a new Kiwi three blade prop on at that time and roughed it up with the 60
grit also. I did confirm with the Kiwi folks that the Zytel blades were
ok with Prop Speed. However there is a metal prep solution that I did not
use on the Zytel. They talked to Prop Speed and all was good.
I just got off the boat and after sitting since mid June and one trip two
weekends ago I found no barnacles on the prop, shaft or strut and the grassy
stuff just wiped away by hand. I am now an official fan of Prop Speed.
