RE: Freedom 28

Posted by Maggi Cowlan (cowlanm@…>)

Any thoughts… we got new sails on our 1983 Freedom 28 - fully battened - they are very very difficult to raise and lower. We’re now investigating different sail tracks to install i.e. Harkness system plus topping lifts for the lazy jacks. Any advice other than that?

Thanks in advance.
Maggi

The STRONG track system is on our 45. we have a fully battened main that whistles up and down. It is a god send. Run don’t walk and get one.

Maggie, investigate the sieves in your masthead. I replaced mine this
summer with 4" Harken ball bearing wheels and I am no longer
considering track and bat car systems. I am using normal slides and
the main on my 38 works like a venetian blind. You may find that your
existing wheels are too small or not spinning. The larger diameter
wheels could offer better geometry with the path of you halyard over
the top. It would be a very inexpensive fix comparedto what you are
considering.

Excellent points re the sheaves. And consider using a smaller diameter halyard with T900 Spectra strength. If you are anywhere near Warren RI, call Paul Dennis at Warren River Boat. He has done this whole refit for many of us.
