re HATCH HANDLES

Posted by Awakening Chi (Awakening.Chi@…>)

Our 33’ has Hood deck hatches and Fuller port lights ( hatches). The
Hood deck hatches are ss frames with ss mechanics and black plastic
interior handles. I obtained replacement parts from the Hood yacht
Systems, a branch of Bomar. Both Hood & Bomar parts and info are
available at www.Pompanette.com. Marty at 813-885-2182 has bee a great
help with Hood parts. She faxed me catalogue sheets and I was able to
determine exactly what pieces I needed, then order them from her. Parts
for the Fuller port lights can be purchased through Fuller site. The
replacement parts from Pompanette are not too expensive., with the
exception of the rubber gasket. I am still looking for an adhesive
that will securely attach rubber to rubber. All that I have tried gets
re-gooy in the heat.

I just finished a haulout in Winthrop MA to do a little epoxy work and paint the bottom. It’s a testament to the previous owner of Bright Star that the bottom looked pretty fantastic after a power wash. The only area that was a concern was the propeller! It had barnacle growth on both sides of both blades.
I had realized on the honeymoon cruise that something wasn’t right, because at 3,000 rpm I could only push the old girl at about 4.5 knots. 3,500, which I hate going to, didn’t even add half a knot to that. I of course assumed the worst - galvanic corrosion of the prop, a missing blade, a giant bucket tied around the rudder post… but in truth, it was all about the extra cavitation created by the barnacles.
I relaunched last night and brought the boat back to Charlestown. at 2,000 rpm, the boat reached 5 kts, at 2,900 (my favorite cruising revs) 6 kts, and at 3,500 7 kts. I know this last speed because I used it to clear Logan’s active runway. I know, logically, that they must be approaching at a higher altitude than it looks, but it is extremely disconcerting to be in the channel, well outside the standoff bouys, and still feel hot, 25 mph jetwash gusts when they are landing.
In any case, Bright Star feels like a new boat with a new prop now. Just in time for my trip to Maine!
Cheers,
Lance

Subject: Re: F45 geniker??
Reed,
We have F 45 # 30, a 1991 model. In 1998 the previous owner modified the sail plan. We have a leisure furl roller furling boom, and a roller furling headsail (with two running back-stays). We also have a brand new never used spinaker that I hope to get rigged this summer.
We have two winches on the cockpit coaming, just aft of the helm. The angle of the sheets to the winches could be better, and on one side the winch handle hits the bimini brace. Both of which can be easily fixed. If you send me your e-mail address I will send you photos of the winch installation. We never had the self tending jib, so most likely do not know what we are missing. I like to have sheets to crank when tacking, it keeps me involved!!!
We bought our boat last fall. I too had concerns about the rig, as our plans will have us roaming as far south as S. America. Everything I could find says it is a stout rig, and not to worry, and I did a lot of research, talking to owners in the US and Europe. Having sailed it for 6 months, it is joy to handle, as we sail with only two people almost all of the time. My neighbor has a taswell 45, and it is a real struggle for the two of them to manage.
My only beefs with the boat are the lack of on-deck storage, and the limited size of the holding tanks. However, I have found that you can go below, lay down in that great aft cabin and dream up ways to manage the storage (I added a stainless steel arch to replace the small davits, and that has helped). The boat is all but perfect below decks. I modified our plumbing system, installing macerator’s to both holding tanks so I can pump the tanks out when offshore. I did not want to end every weekend looking for a pump out station that was working.
I have done a fair amount of work to our energy systems, let me know if you want details. The one constant that I have found is every person who works on the boat marvels over how well they were made, and how well all of the systems are put together.

Agree pretty much with these comments. We mounted our winches aft of the coaming (see pic). The genniker sheet
passes through a turning block on deck to the winch and through a cam cleat
to the helm. Helmsman can easily blow the genniker from there if necessary.
On deck storage is little to none. Over the years we have learned how to
use the stbd lazerette efficiently and we carry less “in case of” stuff.
Considered the arch, but prefer the davits (Kato with crossbar). George E. Herchenroether

One more comment on the mast.
About three years ago an F45 was under a bridge and the operator brought the
bridge down on the mast. The boat responded by going decks awash, but
otherwise popped out from under the bridge and the only damage was the mast
top instruments.

Sorry, self tacking of a headsail where the foot is greater than J is just not possible. It could be automated however, a some cost. Does not seem practical. Perhaps, in order to get a larger headsail, a nose pole of some kind could be adapted, but with possible balance problems as one heads up to close hauled.

You can have a roller furling jib and it can also be self tacking. Works very well. You would only need one small winch. See how they rig a soling or a C & C, Mega 30.

A few years back I suggested on this board to create a
boat swapping group specifically for Freedoms. We could exchange our
boats and/or homes for a few weeks to be able to sail in a totally
different place. At this time, I have no boat to swap, but I do have a
nice 100 yr old Dutch farmhouse at 15 minutes driving from Amsterdam.
