Thanks for replying. I went in through the cockpit locker. I had
two bolts with corroded/frozen nuts on them that I had to use a vice-
grip and monkey wrench to get off. Once the bolts were off, I was
able to remove the old flax and install the new with no problems. I
tied the flange off to the steering cable above to keep it out of the
way. Interestingly, the bolt holes are not evenly spaced apart, so
the flange must be put back the way it came off. I suggest marking
the flange and the stuffing box and lining up the marks when re-
installing (otherwise it will be trial & error). I have not yet had
the need for servicing the rudder gear (other than the stuffing box
of courese) so I’ve never removed the aft stateroom wall. Thanks for
the suggestion - I will do so from now on as I am still recovering
from the contortion I went through in the cockpit locker.
