Re: Need new mast for F21 - Rig as J-22

David,

Over the years various people have found new or repaired their
mast. If I ever loose my mast and it can not be repaired I think an
option that is possible is to rig it similar to a J-22. The hull,
rudder and fin keel are very similar. The mast step would probably
go right over the bulkhead. Something to think about. I would go
look at one.

F-21 = 21.8’ LOA, 17.8’ LWL, 8.0’ Beam, 3.9’ Draft, 1800 lbs
Displacement, 500 lb Lead Fin Keel, 200 sq ft. Sail Area

J-22 = 22.5’ LOA, 19.0’ LWL, 8.0’ Beam, 3.8’ Draft, 1790 lbs
Displacement, 700 lb Lead Keel, 223 sq ft. Sail Area (100%)

Does anyone know where to get a new mast for F21? What the cost

I to have noticed the hull similarities but it is not quite that simple.

The J22’s extra lenght seems to be in the stearn - in fact the F21
tends to drag its butt with s crew of 4 if you don’t move a lot of
stuff up front to counter.

The “J” measurement for the J22 is 2 foot longer. This means that you
would have to rebild the Bulkhead at the rear of the Kitchen Tables to
support a similar mast-location.

Unless you through some stroke of luck was able to maintain the same
center of effort for the sailplan the boat could end up sailing very
differently and probably worse.

The good news is that the current bulkhead probably is strong enough
to support the stays of a stayed mast. With the money saved on the
mast you can extend the rear to you can install a backstay and still
have a little more room for the mainsail which will still have to be
much smaller.

I would check on the cost of a Nonsuch and Freedom 24 mast before
going through all that trouble - you can always try the extra lenght
and cut it off later.

Better yet - repair the current mast.

F 21 MAST

Fix it or build a new one. It would be easier and absolutely better. See Westsystem.com , go to projects and inquire.
