6HP 2-stroke long shaft Johnson with an external fuel tank. It also
had a small generator/alternator built into the engine. I ran a 2-
pole wire to the fuel tank locker with plug. The generator didn’t
produce much output, but at least I had something while I was
motoring – which with the Freedom 21, wasn’t that often.
To keep the (2) batteries topped off while it sat on the mooring
during the week, I used a flexible solar panel from Uni-Solar (no

This solar charger was more than enough to replenish what was used.
The electrical draw was principally the electronics (depth, speed,
LORAN) with some interior lighting (see photos) during the evening.
An occasional anchor light over night. The two deep cycle batteries
were more than enough.
As for engine size, 4HP is probably a bit too small unless yo’re a
racer and just need it to get you to the starting line and back.
8HP is probably too much. I found that the 6HP (it was circa 1984
and weighed 60-65 pounds) was more than adequate. In the Boston
area, we have plenty of tidal current. I did extensive cruising
(2500+ miles) with that boat over 7 years and never felt that I
needed more.

I have a 4hp, 4 stroke yamaha long shaft, which nets about 5 knts. I
got mine with a 6hp sailmaster which I think was original(1984) but
required tinkering every spring. What ever you choose, I sure wish I
had gotten an electric start. There is nothing like just pushing the
start button, when drifting toward the seawall. Clyde
