On mine you must remove the water reservoir. The thermostat is between the tank and the head.

Hi All,

Alabama Queen survived the trip from Mobile to Flushing, the
Netherlands. However, she’s a bit of a Southern hothead girl, and her
engine is overheating. In the course of solving this, I want to
replace the thermostat. But where is it?? I almost long back to the
days of my Volvo Penta 2003 in the F33… Does anybody know where the
thermostat is located on a lowline 1980 early 4.108 Perkins?

Besides: this engine is really a hybride Perkins/Westerbeke; the block
is Perkins, but the exhaust elbow and the heat exchanger are
Westerbeke parts; who knows which parts also; is this common??

cheers, and thanks for every tip,
Michel

Michel,
I’ve got all the manuals aboard and will look up the info for you
and scan it tomorrow. If your 4.108 is like mine, the heat exchanger
is behind the engine, under the oil filter. It may be clogged. I
removed mine last season and had it ‘boiled,’ and the engine runs a
LOT cooler than it used to.

Before you go into the engine, check the saltwater inlet hose.Old ones can
collapse under vacuum. As to Westerbeke, email them-I hear they are helpful.

Micheal,
The thermostat on a 4-108 is located under the header tank. You must remove the header tank ( which is no easy task) to access the thermostat. Good luck!

Lance, it looks like we have the same engine. I also have the
tubular heat exchanger under the oil filter. If I could get your
manual, that would be great, because I don’t have one. Did you also
replace the thermostat?

Jerome,
Thanks for the tip. I think my raw water inlet is okay because the
water is always spurting out of the exhaust in the transom. However,
the raw water goes out as cold as it comes in, so I suspect I have a
problem in the fresh water side of the cooling system. A blockage,
hopefully in the thermostat or the heat exchanger is what I’m
thinking of first.

I’d bet on the heat exchanger. Mine was pretty disgusting before I
had it boiled - I don’t think the zinc had been changed in the
previous two seasons. When I pulled the zinc plug, the zinc was
firmly jammed into the heat exchanger. I’ve written about this
before, but if you decide to remove the heat exchanger, do yourself
a favor and drain the oil and remove the filter. then getting the
exchanger off is a piece of cake.

When changing your thermostat on the 4-108, it is alot easier if you remove both bolts on top of the header tank. One is a bolt that comes out quite easily, the other is a long stud and is more difficult to remove. Be careful not to shear it off, if you do you will have to extract the broken stud fromthe head. If you do not remove these two bolts it is almost impossible to remove the header tank due to the hose connecting the tank to the exhaust manifold, and the rigid copper tubing (return line) from the exhaust manifold to the header tank. I just did mine today. When reassembling, be careful not to disturb the new gasket or damage the top of the new thermostat when placing the tank back into position. Also, concerning the heat exchanger (mine is also at the rear of the engine under the oil filter), always use two wrenches when removing the zinc. One on the zinc plug and the other on the fitting on the tank. These copper tanks are very soft and it is easy to tear the fitting right out of the tank if the plug is very tinght. Also, make sure you place rubber protectors under the hose clamps used to secure the tank in place. Otherwise, the clamps will severely dent the tank, which usually results in no warranty when a shop boils and services the exchanger. Good luck!
