Hi Melissa,
My curiousity has nothing to do with the size of Polecat, it’s just
that I don’t know many women owning a seagoing sailing boat by
themselves. Yachting is mainly a boys’ thing, at least on my side of
the Atlantic.

Michel may not be “politically correct” but is observation is pretty
accurate. How many substantial cruising boats are owned by a single
woman owner? I’ve been around boats my entire life and spent some
enjoyable living aboard with my wife. The overwhlming percentage of
large cruising boats are owned by men or couples. That’s reality.
Personally I think our sport would be better off if we had more single
woman owners and more ethnic diversity.

In his book Ready About, Garry Hoyt describes the problem and
possible solutions of the lack of female sailors. One of his
solutions was designing his line of Freedom yachts. They are unlike
all other macho attracting, genoa pulling, muscle needing sloop
yachts of his era.

Ready About is still interesting and topical, even twenty years

Isabelle Autissier is another name that comes to mind. What the hell
happened to her anyway? Did she retire from ocean racing? Still
neither one of those great sailors own a cruising boat. Pat Henry is
a notable American solo circumnavigator. This summer we met a woman
singlehander on a large Beneteau. Don’t worry Michel. Statistically
your observation about women being a distinct minority among yacht
owners is accurate and a bloody shame. Owning and maintaining a
decent sized cruising boat does not seem to appeal to many single
woman.
