RE- Propane Cylinders

Posted by Michael Gillin (michael_w_gillin@…>)

Hi Folks ; Can anyone assist in telling me how I should go about
recertifying the original propane cylinders that are located in the
port & stbd cockpit lockers.

Has anyone gone through the process and had them filled again.
Or has anyone abandoned them and gone to a different propane tank.

I would like to get these refilled but I am at a loss determining the
lbs and what to ask for.

Thanks

Captain Michael

If
you are referring to the new over-fill protection valves, they can be retrofitted
to the older cylinders for a lot less than the cost of new cylinders.

I had my 7 (8?) lb tank re-valved to the new requirements and filled for
$25. I also bought a second tank for $125.00 from West Marine.

Hi,

I’ve taken my horizontal tanks to the local gas company (Ferrel Gas in
Minneapolis) where they fill them on site. The guy there looks at the
tank and is able to read the lbs from the various numbers stamped on the
tank. This is not your local gas station that also fills propane tanks.
This is a place that fills small as well as industrial propane tanks.

Sorry but I disagree. The horizontal tanks cannot be fitted with the new
overfill device that is now common on the tanks for the everyday grill.
They are somehow exempt from the overfill device regulation. At least
that’s what my local gas company tells me when they fill them.

Hi Al,

I’ve never actually seen the over fill device, but my guess is that they
use some type of float that relies on vertical travel in order to work.
There’s not much vertical travel in a horizontal tank. That’s all I can
figure. But I’ll ask next time I have mine filled.

I’m in Europe, and the rules are different here. I donned the
aluminum propane bottle (connection non-conforms to EU rules) and
bought a plastic propane bottle from BP. They are becoming rapidly
popular here.

Hi Alvin ; Thanks for the information . Do you know what makes them exempt ?
Also do you know the size of the tanks ?
So I gather you can go to any propane site and have them filled correct ?

When the tank is horizontal the overfill device is activated and shuts off
the flow of gas. This is also true of “plumber” propane tanks which are
often laid on their side while the plumber heats a joint. A plumber tank is
also exempt. Bear in mind that a propane tank is filled with liquid propane
and only the gas is used. When on its side the liquid is in the valve.

Hi Michael,
I you have the horizontal tank, it’s a 7 pounder and can be
refilled without certification as they are grandfathered. I believe
there is a posting about this on this site of the 2003 site. Some
gas places are aware of the current status and some aren’t, so you’ll
have to prove it.
Good luck.

I don’t understand how a horizontal tank can be re-valved and still
work. The traditional horizontal tank has a internal tube with an
elbow at the end that attaches to the valve. That’s why it is locked
in place on one side only. I have inquired about purchasing an
addition 7lb horizontal tank and can’t seem to fine a source. As my
grandaughter says “splain…”
Thanks,

I brought one of the horizontal tanks in
to a place here in New York
to be retro-fitted with a legal valve and was told by law the tank should be
confiscated as it was no longer legal.
I’m guessing the place I went to isn’t
aware of the grandfathering of those tanks.
Does anyone have a copy of the
certification notice that can be shared?

Hi Michael,
I you have the horizontal tank, it’s a 7 pounder and can be
refilled without certification as they are grandfathered. I believe
there is a posting about this on this site of the 2003 site. Some
gas places are aware of the current status and some aren’t, so you’ll
have to prove it.
Good luck.

Has anyone gone through the process and had them filled again.
Or has anyone abandoned them and gone to a different propane tank.

I would like to get these refilled but I am at a loss determining the=20
lbs and what to ask for.

Thanks

WestMarine and Defender has an aluminum 7lbs
tank at around $125. I have not found a steel tank yet. I am
currently using a 5lb tank in my F30 and it just fits. I am going to get
another ($65) during the year.

Thanks,
TW

Hi Al ; I have reached out to Milo and asked if he had any experience in
replacing the toilet on the freedom 32.
I haven’t seen an access panel to allow reaching under the pan to get a wrench
on the nuts other than a small opening under the sink and from the hanging
locker .

Any ideas ? I suppose I can cut the bolts off and use stainless lag bolts in the
reinstall .

I appreciate all the advice you folks have given me.

Regards

Michael

Sorry but I disagree. The horizontal tanks cannot be fitted with the new
overfill device that is now common on the tanks for the everyday grill.
They are somehow exempt from the overfill device regulation. At least
that’s what my local gas company tells me when they fill them.

I’m
afraid I have no experience with the Freedom 32. You might want to repost
your inquiry on the other Yahoo Freedom board, FreedomOwnersGroup, as very few
people watch this board any more.
