RE: running rigging/track friction

Posted by Fargo Rousseau (fargo_r@…>)

Hi Doug:

Main sail track was our big friction point. Did not
have time to go aloft or to build the super track lub
system shown last week on this site. So…went with
the low tech ArmorAll Pad approach suggest a few days
ago. Worked amazingly well on our first shakedown in
25 kn. gusty weather. Main actually fell down when
released from cockpit…in spite of the wind load.

We made a small improvement in the “pad” system.
Instead of the suggested 2 x 2 in. pad stuffed in the
track, we took a 5 x 2 pad and wrapped it around a key
chain ring of the right size. The pad was folded to
form an upside down envelope and the ring inserted
through the bottom opening in the envelope and the
wedged into the track openening. Ring was sized so
that it proved some light expansion pressure on the
inside of the sail track. I was trying to be sure
that the lub was spread on all internal friction
surfaces. Seems to have done a great job. Before doing
this “lub” the main had to be pulled down even in a
light breeze.

I inserted this pad between the headboard slide and
the next one down as suggested. The pad went up and
came down in one piece… I think the ring will be
reusable. We found the ArmorAll pads the an auto parts
store for $5.99. If this really works I think we have
a two year supply. A $6 solution…open to further
developement.

Welcome aboard.

I own a Mull 30 and had much the same friction
problem. I replaced all
of the blocks with Garhauer blocks and used the
proper size line (a
previous owner used line that was much too big).
Except for my in boom
reefing, everything is quite slippery now.

There’s an owner’s manual for the 32 posted on this
site’s Files
section. I believe it has spinnaker rigging info.

Subject: [freedomyachts2003] running rigging

Hi, I’m brand new to the group, and I’m just
finishing a major
overhaul on an English built 1985 cat sloop, with
the self tending
jib, and a fully battened main. I bought “Pegasus”
at a foreclosure
sale in Solomans Island on the Chesapeake, and
sailed her there for
one season. It was fun but it became clear that she
needed major
help. In particular, the running rigging had so much
friction in it
that I constantly had to go forward to deal with the
halyards and
sheets. In addition, the entire spinnaker, system
except for the
spar, was missing. Any drawings or advice on
these problems
would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Doug Baker.
