Guys,
How do you keep that masts centered in the hole while the Spartite
is poored in and sets? A bit of wind or boat movement will push
aside the gunk while it’s still soft, or not? Do you use temporary
wedges, and poor in more Spartite later to fill the wedge holes? I’m
curious how to do this.

Hello Dave,
I’ve had Spartite in place on both mizzen and main for about 7
years
now. No ill effects. I was careful to use vasoline to prevent
it
from sticking to the mast. I haven’t pulled the mast since I
installed it however, so I don’t know how much sticking I’ll run
into
if I do have to pull either mast. It’s very effective at keeping
water out of the interior, and as you’ll remember, I don’t use a
mast
boot.
It was tricky to install. You are supposed to build a “dam”
that will
prevent the Spartite from leaking while it is setting up. I had
Spartite in my hair, on my skin and clothes before I was done.

Center the mast temporarily with the Jib and main halyards and some
lines tied around the mast running port and starboard. Make the dam,
vaseline the partners and pour the spartite up to the level of the
partners. place saran wrap over the spartite and lower down and
tighten the mast collar. Once tightened, insert wedges between the
collar and the mast till the spartite kicks.

Ah! Good thinking; just use the collar to center the masts! Thanks
macks!
