Re-wiring

Hi All,

No one replied to my rewiring question. Should I assume that you had
a marine electrician rewire your boat? If you did, how much did you
pay?

I still have the circuit box I intended to install in the garage. The only thing I did was to add another battery under the port sette. I use that for my fish finder and dc outlets. I want to add a battery switch and shore power also. When you state rewire do you mean everything?? You might want to try the following DIY books: Sailboat Electrics Simplified by Don Casey, Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual and, of course, Good Old Boat by Don Casey. Max, All of the re-wiring, switch panels, etc. done on “Blue Merle” was done by myself. This included replacing all of the running lights, mast wiring, instrument wiring, lights, etc. DC wiring is pretty simple. No need to pay to have someone do it. Besides, you get to know your boat’s wiring inside and out. Valuable when something doesn’t work. Just use proper marine wire of the proper size for the item on the other end. I rewired my entire boat “Fancy Free”
and I agree with John “Blue Merle” that DC wiring is very easy.

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions on what books to buy. I have ordered one
and awaiting its arrival.

I assume from everyone saying that 12 volt DC wiring is easy, that
no one learned any special lessons from their successful attempts.
For example, one message that I recall reading a while ago suggested
that all mast wiring should be enclosed in a foam casing like that
used to insulate pipes to keep the wiring from banging on the inside
of the mast. This, I read made for much better sleeping aboard.

I read that some people had a great deal of difficulty replacing the
mast cap with a new one once they removed it to install wiring.

Another problem I read about was the issues about attaching brackets
to the fiber mast. What to do when a bracket attached to the top of
the mast is broken or partially broken.

Then there is the issue of bringing wires from the mast into the
cabin. Since the mast is removed, the wiring must have connectors
between the control panel and the mast and between the VHF radio and
the mast to allow the removal of the mast.

True. I used 1/2" foam pipe insulation when I did “Blue Merle”.
Another solution has been to make “spiders” out of wire ties at various
intervals.

Use a PL coax connector of the proper size (depending upon coax wire
number) for the VHF radio connection. As for the DC wires running up
the mast, you can use an “n”-pole (e.g., 4 wire) round connector.
