On my F35 '94 I accidentally pulled the reefing line for the second reef out of the boom. The first reef still functions well.
How can I re-rig the second reef? Can’t figure out the process, and the book that came with the boat doesn’t explain. It only shows the pulley box inside the boom.
Thanks,
Lou

Al,
Those are mighty hefty rivets. Did you do the work yourself?
How hard was the re-reeving process?

I had a reefing line pull through the boom and out of necessity
developed a specialty tool to help re-rig it. I cut the hook off the
end of my tape measure (making sure not to let it retract afterwards).
We were able to snake the tape through the boom and the rest was
tying, pulling, wrapping and securing. I still have that custom tool
except it now has duck tape at the end (and you now have to add 2.75"
to every measurement).

Rick,
That’s thinking outside the box and inside the boom!
Where did you access the line? The only boom ‘port’ is where the outhaul line exits on the starboard side.

Subject: [freedomyachts2003] Re: reefing line pulled out
My line came untied at the hook on the sail (new line). We started at
the mast end of the boom where the reefing line sheave is and pushed
the tape through until I could get to it with a screwdriver and fish
it out the other end. Then we secured a messenger line to the tape
and pulled it back through, then the reefing line to the messenger
line and that was it. Sounds real easy typing it in but it took 2 of
us an hour to get everything fished through. I’m thinking my boom is
different from your. Mine is somewhat open on the underside of the
outhaul end (enough so that birds started to build a nest in there
which we cleared while fishing for tape) giving me access.

OK, so as a new member of this group, I’ll ask a silly question: Why
bother with 2 reefing line? I’ve only owned my F-35 for 2 seasons,
but have found no use for the second reef during coastal cruising.
The boat handles fine up to 25 knots with 1 reef and if it blows
harder than that, I’ll motor-sailing with only the jib up. The second
reef line just gets in the way while stowing the main.

I am a new F35 owner as well. I just completed my first full season
with my F35. At first I had the same thought as you about the need for
the 2nd reef line. More bother than it is worth. But now I would not
do away with it for the world.
Several times this season I was out in winds blowing a constant 25+.
In these conditions a single reef was just not enough. Especially
beating. The weather helm was extreme and the boat became
uncontrollable. Putting in a 2nd reef, with the jib, balanced the boat
nicely. The helm was light, the boat was in control, and she just
flies (7+ kts easily). Why trade that for slogging it out under power
at 4 to 5 kts?
Ah, yes, I remember sailing Narragansett & The Islands in summer '06
with 25-30 sou’westers, and agree with your experience. Now sail the
west coast of Florida in winter, where it’s over 25 only during a
cold-front passage, and nobody sails in that stuff if they can help
it. I got away with never using the 2nd reef last season and will try
doing without this year. Will let you know how it goes.
