Our Grunert AR-50 just died. Major pain.
Anyway, Cay Electronics in Portsmouth, RI is pushing us to replace it
with the Seafrost BD system, which is an evaporator system rather than
a holding plate. Pluses and minues to everything, but we are inclined
to go with it. Frankly, the Grunert compressor was a bit of a pain, as
it was loud, vibrated, and drew 30 amps when running. Having a new
system that’s silent and draws about 5 to 6 amps when it runs sounds
awfully attractive.
One question I have is that the unit is rated to cool a box that is 12
square feet. Anyone know the size of the F-45 fridge and freezer
compartments?
Thanks,
DG

Hi DG -
Wasn’t that 12 cubic feet?
My fridge is roughly 2 ft by 1.4 feet by 2 feet deep, giving approx 5.6 cu ft. I have a second one, that has two plates and can be used as a freezer, which is somewhat larger - maybe around 7 cubic feet.
The idea of a much lower amp system is very important to the formula. I am waiting for my 1992 Grunert to fail so I can justify replacing the system with the newer technology. But it keeps on running! We run it whenever we are motoring, since the alternator can keep up with the 30 amp DC load better than the battery charger run from the generator.
Good luck.

Not that you asked, but you might also check out a frigoboat keel-
cooled system. I installed on last spring and it has been flawless.
The compressor is completely quiet - the spillover fan that was
installed to move air from the freezer compartment to the
refrigerated side is louder (by a whisper) than the compressor
itself. The keel-cooler means there’s no raw-water intake, and it’s
based on a danfoss compressor that’s very reliable.
I got mine from great-water.com, and there are evaporator and
holding plate versions available. Mark at Great Water was an
excellent resource.
Just my 2cts, since you’re replacing anyway.

Yep, I’m an idiot. I meant cubic feet. Thanks for the info.
