Remember the “cordless drill as an electric winch” thread? Well….

I saw this at the Miami boat show a few weeks ago. They were also
showing some sort of foam padding jacket for the drill, too. I’m not
sure if it was supposed to be padding if you drop the drill on deck
or a “PFD” for the drill if you drop it overboard. It wasn’t
waterproof.

The bit looked good and I don’t want to admit what a cheapskate I am
here but it seems like you could just have one machined for about the
same money. Maybe some smaller, cheaper cordless drills would work
but an 18 volt Milwaukee right angle drill would work best with it
and it’s at least $250.

Humm,… 3 boat bucks.

`Ya gotta really want this thing.

Check out the heavy duty cordless Craftsman angle drill at Sears.
Less than 100 bucks.

Rick- just rejoined the board here. I am the one that posted the
bit/drill deal a while ago. I had one machined square to match a
square winch handle I had, the other end 1/2" (with three flats to
prevent slipping) to fit a 24 volt Craftsman drill from Sears. The
whole shebang cost me about $300 including the extended warranty on
the drill. It comes with two batteries and can be charged in 1 hour
from a 150W inverter (about $30 if you don’t already have one) that
plugs into a cigarette lighter socket on your boat. The upright
drill is a little less handy than a right angle. I found a right
angle drive at the woodworker’s warehouse but it was only a 3/8
drive. I didin’t consider that to be a necessity- I use the drill
upright. I get 4 hoists on a battery- 2 mainsail hoists of about 50’
and heavy and two mizzen hoists of 40’ and easier. The second
battery is always available in a moment already charged if needed.
If you want more info or photos let me know. I began using it less
last summer since I wasn’t getting enough exercise, but when I want
it- it’s there! Lenny
