Removing Masts

How difficult is it to remove and replace masts on a freedom 33 cat
ketch? Wondering about trucking one
Thanks

I have an F-33 hull # 51 1982 with carbon fiber masts. They are removed each year. As long as the rigger knows what he’s doing (since there are no spreaders to wrap around) its quite straightforward unless someone along the way has epoxied your mast to the base or cabin top.
On mine you:

  1. remove the 2 screws at the base of each mast (on the main mast on mine one of the screws is forward so you won’t see it and must feel for it)
  2. Remove the trim ring on the cabin ceiling for the mizzen mast so you have access to the thick split ring bushing.
  3. Remove the split ring bushings from each mast as you go (making sure their supported and don’t scrape on the mast collar on the cabin top.
  4. Lift the masts out. (removing wedges at the bases to avoid losing them)
The masts should lift right through the collar if they haven’t been modified in some way.
Some riggers unbolt the collars on deck either because they think its necessary or because it makes easier to avoid scratching the mast on the way out. Dimensionally the maximum dimension of the base of the mast is slightly less then the inside dimension of the aluminum collar.
    Alan

Thanks for the info, I am looking at an '82 and am wondering if there
is a particular area to be aware of for core damage in the hull when
I inspect it. Also any other help would be appreciated. My cell is

dime. Thanks, Ron

I strongly recommend you get a competent, impartial surveyor to do the
inspection. Even the best of boats may have some problems. Surveyors have
access to survey records of other similar boats, and,by knowing what to look
for, can render a more informed, and informative, report…BTW,core damage is
detectable by moisture measurements,or at least the moisture leading to
damage is .

My surveyor percussion tested the entire hull. Took a while. He used
a moisture meter on a spot or two on the deck. Moisture meters are
not as simple and straight forward as you’d think. They can be
tricked particularly on horizontal surfaces. It’s critical that you
find a highly competent surveyor. This will not be someone
recommended by many brokers. When we bought our 39 in San Diego I
flew my surveyor down from the Bay Area to conduct the survey.
