So, there I am at a marine store getting replacement lines for all the lines on
the boat–when
I get the order and look at the invoice, the Main and Spinnaker Halyards they
gave me were
both 3 strand nylon 5/16" rope–not the sta set braid on the rigging list. Is
that going to
work? Or do I need to go back to the marine store to return what they gave me?

Totally wrong material for a halyard.
First off, you don’t use three strand for a sailboat’s running
rigging – unless it is an antique (classic) and you want to use
classic lines.
Secondly, nylon has too much stretch and doesn’t do well with constant
exposure to sun. That is why it is used for anchor rodes and dock
lines (stretch).
You want, at a minimum, polyester double-braid.

I bought new halyards last year and decided on sta-set x 5/16. You will be cranking the halyards with a winch and that is a lot of tension. Good line lasts years longer than the cheap stuff. Check out West marines outlet online. I bought 100 ft. of sta-set x last year for 14 cents a foot.Yes I said 14 cents.Good luck.
