replacing a depth sounder

We have a 1987 Freedom 30, and would like to replace our old factory installed sounder with a Lowrance Sonar/GPS Chartplotter combo. However, we do not want to cut into the balsa cored hull!!! Will a transducer work efficiently THROUGH the balsa core? We would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Margaret

Take out the old transducer if it is a thru hull, and re-use the hole.
Transducers will not reliably perform thru a cored hull-

Transducers on the inside are not
recommended for balsa. Many of the freedom models (not sure about the 30) have
solid fiberglass below a certain point. On my 33 the depth transducer does not
go through the balsa.
I wouldn’t worry about going through
the balsa though. Just do it properly such as scraping back the balsa a inch
and filling with epoxy and filler compound so there can be no water intrusion.
I had one thru hull that must have been
added by a previous owner that had some leakage and was through the core. I
took it out and the balsa was fine. I scraped it back and filled with epoxy and
put in a new thru hull.

The
area around the centerline of a Freedom 30 is solid glass so if you choose not
to reuse the old hole, cutting a new one is straightforward. My depth
sounder transducer goes through solid glass directly in front of the keel.

I have a freedm 40/40 2001 and added a garmin transducer just ahead of the keel. the area is solid fiberglass and the transducer works great through the hull, no holes needed. Thanks for your help - the old hole is the wrong size for the new transducer, however, we should be able to rough up the fibreglass a little, and resin the transducer directly to the hull. thaks for your speedy response. All Lorman confirmed the F30 solid fibreglass in front of the keel. So that’s a relief. By
the way, I neglected to note that although I have a through hull depth transducer,
it worked sporadically when I first boat my boat. Rather than have it hauled
mid-season to be replaced, I bought a cheap depth sounder on eBay and epoxied
the transducer inside the hull just in front of the through hull. It
worked fine. (I did replace the transducer when I had the boat hauled
later, so now I have a spare.)
