Well, I’ve finally gotten the booms back on Bright Star with new
sheaves at both ends, new garhauer fiddle blocks for the outhauls,
new car wheels for the outhaul cars, and all new control lines for
the outhaul. things are running better than they were, with more
range for the outhauls, and of course the nice look of new, slippery
lines. Oh yeah, and the bird/squirrel/chipmunk nests are gone. I
think the mizzen may be 5 lbs lighter from that alone.
Next week, a rigger’s coming by to look at the ‘running backstays,’
with the idea of taking them off completely from the main and
putting some real, adjustable, usable backstays on the mizzen for
the mizzen spinnaker and staysails, which I’d like to experiment
with this summer. Just have to get them out of the loft.
If anyone in the Mass/RI/CT area needs to borrow a 1/4" manual rivet
gun or a handful of aluminum 1/4" rivets, please let me know - I’ll
be happy to let anyone on the board borrow the tool, since it’s
expensive but only useful for a few jobs. Just let me know here or
off board.
The salon hatch just went to Select Plastics for reglazing, and
should be back in about two weeks. Then it’s just a couple coats of
deck paint, and I think she’s ready for the summer. It’s really nice
to see the weather getting better

I just spent an hour with a polishing machine to make two of my deck
hatches transparent again; good result for a few blobs of polishing
compound. I could do this job outside; here in North Western Europe
we also finally get spring. Did you know the tulips and hyacinths
are one whole month behind schedule??

Unfortunately for me, it wasn’t about the view through the hatch,
but the fact that the hatch was leaking from 3 corners. I know I
could have done the work myself, but with everything else, it’s
worth the $500 to have the job professionally glued and cured, plus
having an nicro vent ring put in for the solar vent.
I didn’t know the flowers were that far behind, but I’m not
surprised. Last year, we had no spring… just an extended nasty
winter that suddenly went to summer.
