Rope clutches/Dingy Davits

Posted by swardfullsail (swardfullsail@…>)

Can people recommend a good type of rope clutch for my Freedom 32. I
saw that someone had recommended the Garhauer brand. Would others
concur or are there others that are equally as good or better.

Also I have done some research on dingy davits and it seems to me that
the Kato brand would be the best for this boat. Does anyone have any
comments to that?

I installed Spinlock XAS clutches on my F30; they can usually be purchased very inexpensively on eBay. I’m satisfied with them. I’m sure the Garhauer ones are fine; all of the other hardware I’ve installed is Garhauer.

I installed Lewmar D2 line clutches and am quite happy. ALthough a bit heavy and a larger footprint I chose them since they release easily at full load. In practice I think any of the current rope clutch models from most vendors work well.

Thank you, I did look at the Practical Sailor and the article I read was from 2001. Their best choice was Spinlock XAS, so I have two set aside at West Marine. I have worked there and still get the discount so they are about half price thankfully.

I’m leaving Baltimore the middle of next week with a couple of crew members and hope to make some time as I am leaving about a month later than expected. I will be working at West Marine in Marathon-my destination. When I leave I will unsubscribe from the Freedom site until I get to where I get to so I don’t have so many emails that I can’t get to read. I really enjoy this website-so helpful for me.

Sward,
I have Garhauer, and am VERY satisfied with them. They are rated very high, they’re easy on line (some definitely aren’t), and they are very reasonable. One of the neat things about Garhauer is that they will work with you to customize things, which few makers these days will do. They will custom-make clutch units up to six gang units, if you need them (I did).
They also release very easily under high load like any hi quality unit. I have changed almost all my blocks over to Garhauer, and also have one of their rigid vangs. That plus a radar pole, and OB lift arm. All their stuff is very high quality, I highly recommend them.

PS, This probably sounds like an ad, but I have no affiliation with them other than liking their stuff…Pswardfullsail <swardfullsail@…> wrote:

Only six inches, is that a problem???

Kidding aside, their new stuff (blocks etc) are really quite light considering they are mostly stainless. Don’t forget, I replaced blocks, many of which were the old heavy Harken stuff circa late 1980’s. As for the rigid vang, that replaced a &%$#@?!!*)$ boomkicker, and a heavy rope vang, so that was about a wash. The radar was not a replacement, so I picked up a few pounds there, but WELL worth it. All in all, I’m a happy man!
