Arrived at the boat yesterday to a disaster! The rudder has completely broken off, leaving a small amount of sheared off metalwork but no pintels or gudgeons etc. Does anyone have the specs for the rudder and tiller? I think I have found somewhere that can make a replacement but they need something to go from.
A friend is going to dive around the mooring to see if it is lying in the mud but I’m not holding my breath.

I have no idea - it was checked over whilst out of the water - no problems - the only thing I can think of is that there was a big blow and a couple of boats came off their moorings, so perhaps it got sideswiped by a passing boat.

Thank you for offering to do that! Our friend has just managed to recover the whole thing from the bed of the lake - minus all the metal work apart from some mangled brackets. We will have to find a way of getting it all replaced.
You’re right though - it would be a useful thing to have on the information site.

Hi Barbara,
I have checked & measured a number of F21 rudders as I need to make up a new lifting rudder for my twin lifting keel UK F21 as my current “butchered” fixed rudder is a joke & looks nothing like the right shape. I will draw-up a dimensioned sketch for you and post it on the website - since there was no “official” set of dimensions I trust that my measured rudder dimensions will serve your purpose? As for the tiller Ii will give you my tiller dimensions but I guess that tiller dimensions are a matter of personal taste anyway. I’ll not be able to do this until the weekend - hope that’s OK?

Wilf,
I am about to take to my 6ft rudder blade with a saw to cut it down to
a more realistic length. Seeing as I normally sail comfortably with a
foot or so of the blade sticking up out of the rudder box I was going
to take a foot off the bottom. Do you have the measurements handy
mentioned in the message below? I just want double check before I cut
it too short and end up losing a young’n over the side in the throws
of a wild broach caused by not having enough rudder in the water.
Also if anyone has any advice about the best side profile for the
bottom of the blade it would be much appreciated. It seems to be a
NACA section but it is U shaped at the bottom with the bias of the U
aft of centre. I find it vibrates madly in 12-15 knots in flat water
when the boat hits top speed. I am guessing a straight edge angled
down lower as it moves aft would be better to avoid the vibration and
still rise without breaking if we ever hit the mud unintentionally.
The current U shape just doesn’t look right.

Many thanks for the uploading article and your great website. Being
able to get this information online makes owning a F21, so much fun.
Wilf, this was exactly the information I was looking for. Looks like I
can cut a fair bit more off the blade than I had planned to. The
current tip shape and profile details also explain the vibration I
have been experiencing at good speeds on flat water. Let’s hope
squaring the profile up and adding a knife edge improves the overall
performance a little. I’ll probably go with the elliptical profile as
it seems this may save the blade a little if I ever inadvertently hit
the bottom for some reason.
