Rudder F-33

Posted by tgcmd (Finesse@…>)

Can anybody tell me how the F-33 rudder is constructed? I want to connect a
rudder
position sensor for an autopilot (Autohelm ST4000+MKII). I have to figure out
how best to
attach a rod or cable from the sensor to the rudder.

It is made of two halves laminated together with a stainless tube
laminated in the front edge. You will need a waterproof rudder angle
sensor, because there are no below-deck parts on an F33 rudder (at
least, not on my European version, the F35 catketch).

On my F35 the autohelm rudder position sensor attaches to the rudder
quadrant gear, inside the boat.

Doesn’t the Autohelm 4000 have a rudder angle algorithim built in,
displaying as a dark bar either side of center on the LCD?

I had to replace my new ST4000 plus after a lightning strike this summer and discovered that Raymarine now includes a rudder sensor unit as part of the package (at no apparent change of price). When I bought the first unit a year ago, the rudder angle sensor was an option.
