Has anyone out there had experience in dropping the rudder on a
Freedom 39? It is a skeg hung variety. I am looking for information
on how the procedure should go and what type of bushing or bearing is
in there. Thanks. David Jensen

Hello Dave,
I had mine dropped a couple years ago. Svends did the job and I wasn’t present.
Mark Edwards has a real good understanding of the rudder in the 39. I exchanged
email with him prior to dropping mine.
As I recall, the bearing is bronze. Packing gland material is used to keep the
water out. There are 4 bolts positioned around the rudder post where it enters
the hull. The bolts can be tightened independently to adjust the tension, and
thus the leakage into the hull, of the packing material. I had Svens replace my
packing material when they pulled the rudder. I made several adjustments to the
new packing material over several months, but it now leaks a just a tiny bit,
and I am comfortable with it as is.
