The lower gudgeon on our rudder has sheared off for the second time in
a year. We are about to replace it with the same gudgeon - a Holt Allen
HA4018-54 as this is what was on when we originally got the boat. The
first time it happened we had to retrieve the rudder from the bottom of
the lake as both had sheared, this time we noticed something was wrong
so just didn’t go for a sail (typically a perfect day too).
Two questions - has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you
solve it and secondly, how do you leave your rudder when you leave the
boat - tied up/swinging in the breeze etc.

Since I motor on the Merrimac river–wicked current–and sail in the
ocean, a rudder falling off would be really bad news. It hasn’t
happened so far(please, please don’t let it ever happen). When I am
docked I fasten the “tiller tamer” lines to keep the rudder in a
middle position.

I just took a look (on-line) at that part
and no wonder it shears off - it appears to be made up from two parts: strap
assembly and a gudgeon riveted to the strap assembly. Is that correct? If
so, did it shear at the rivets?
I believe that my F21 had one piece
gudgeons on the rudder. I remember using J-24 parts when I rebuilt my
rudder (had a cracked head). Maybe you should consider replacing all of
the HA rudder parts.
You really don’t want to be sailing
close hauled in breeze and have one of these go: speaking from experience, it’s
dangerous.

My F-21 uses SCH8147,SCH8148 and two SCH81150.
I also carry a spare pin SCH8149.
These are heavy duty small sailboat hardware.

Strangely enough, the gudgeon didn’t shear anywhere near the rivets but on the right angle bend, so maybe it was just a weak spot on that particular part (she says hopefully). I lugged the thing to the local chandlery, arrived looking like the incredible hulk covered in thick, green, foul slime, and the gudgeons they offered were exactly the same. I did ask if they had anything heavier duty but they didn’t although I have to say that they are about the most unhelpful chandlery I have ever been in, particularly if you are the female of the species!

The Schaefer hardware to which Nick Marino
refers is exactly the hardware I had on my F21 rudder and transom.
I suggest that you replace every bit of
the HA hardware with this. It is in fact what is used on a J-24 and considerably
stronger than the HA stuff.
Where was your boat made? I wasn’t
aware that TPI used a HA hardware on its rudders.
If your boat was made by other than TPI,
be sure that you measure the width of the rudder head and then use gudgeons that
are the same width.
