sagging headliner

Posted by thalloin (lhalloin@…>)

Our 1987 F-30 has a sagging vinyl headliner. I am hoping to reuse the
vinyl and glue it back to the plywood ceiling. I am interested in
ideas on what to use for glue and any suggestions and hints.

I reused the vinyl after scarping the old foam off both the vinyl and the plywood. I used 3M heavy duty spray adhesive, which worked only so-so, as well as a thick, spreadable adhesive that someone of this board recommended. That worked better; now if I could just remember the name of the product.

It’s not too much more work to replace with new than to try to re-
establish the old head liner. I did this project last season. If you
have questions, feel free to e-mail.

I had the same problem of “sagging headliner” when I purchased my Hoyt32. Inasmuch as all the “sag” was located in the main saloon/galley area, I removed all of it, inspected things and decided to replace it all with new stuff. Having never been a fan of foam backed vinyl, I went to a commercial material shop and got vinyl that is used on auto soft tops (exterior) which has a “fuzzy” backing and is literally indistinguishable from the original headliner. Using the old panels as templates, I cut new ones out of mahogany door skin (home Depot/Lowe’s). I used commercial contact adhesive and a cheap spray gun for application. My overheads now look like new, and that was four years ago. If you want any further detail about the procedure, mail me direct.
