Does anyone have any comments re: sailing instruments. My Standard Horizon unit has died, and they no longer service it(so they say). Looking to replace, and am expecting sticker shock. TIA

The Signet instruments on L’Audace were DOA when I bought the boat. They were
original 1982. In fairness to Signet, their original instruments on my 1979 Cal
work fine, except for wind speed. I bought the Tacktick Micronet instruments,
primarily to avoid the cable through the mast to the wind sensor. West Marine
replaced the initial wind instruments “no questions asked,” when they failed out
of the box. About a month ago it failed again. The US distributor for TackTick
has had the sensor unit for about three weeks & has not responded to my e-mail
asking about status.

Hello Jerry. Some of mine are kaput also. Some I
replaced last year. My son and I are headed to the
Seattle Boat Show tomorrow and Monday. If you read up
on Practical Sailor, or get other great advice here as
to preferred new suites, let me know. I can check out
boat show price specials for you. As to your
expectatioins of sticker shock, I’m guessing that
tracks…

You might try DMI, Inc http://www.dmimarine.com/
They are clever folks who can supply fixes for many Datamarine instruments and may work on Standard Horizon as well. They also sell new stuff of their own design and manufacture. They were able to provide a new speed transducer for my Datamarine one and the price was reasonable.

Raymarine all the way!! I have the ST60 package (along with thier
radar, fishfinder, autohelm, and CL70 screen) and found them to be
easy to install and network. Pretty much the least exspensive out
there as well. Defender will occasionally have a sell, and no tax for
us west coasters!! Did I mention great customer service?
