Sealants

Posted by macks011 (macks04@…>)

I pulled the mast today on my F36 and while I had no leak problem, I
noticed that the sealant between the mast and the collar had failed.
I had used a polysulfide (Lifecaulk)and the mast movement was too
much for it. What elastomeric sealant has the grip and elsticity for
this application ?

Question 2; Has any one used duct tape to fix the Freedom Mast Base
Syndrome? What has proved effective? easy?

All I use on the mast is a short line of silicone where the ends of the “horsecollar” meet. The pressure the rest of the way around seems enough to keep water out.

I use black silicone to fill the void around the mast (between mast
and collar…build a dam of duct tape first on top of the wedges.

Use the quart tubes of silicone and lay it in. Mask the mast and
collar first. Tool it with an ice cube, leaving a slope away from
the mast. Haven’t redone it in seven years. (Boat stays in water,
masts up, year round)

Nary a drip

The ice cube trick works great for all caulks and sealants (just
make sure you get enough on the first time, as the moisture from the
ice cube will play hell with “adding a little more” as you go along.
