shaft seal

Three years ago, I replaced a Syntron with a PSS Low Speed. There is
room on an F36, But ONLY, if the shaft key way does NOT extend aft
of the coupling. Since that time, I have had problems with the seal
running dry. The bottom of the F36 is occasionally exposed due to
wakes or rough chop and the shaft log gets air bound, unbeknownst to
the operator.

I was going to go back to the Syntron, but the shaft is scored, so
even if I rebuilt the Syntron ($250.00+), it would still leak. I
spoke to PSS and they agreed to give me a Hi Speed Seal (vented) for
1/2 price. It’s installed and I’ll let you know how it works out
when launched.

If you do choose to use the PSS seal, change out the solid coupling
for a split. It’s shorter, giving you more room for the seal, and
it’s easier to install and remove the shaft.

When you install the seal, you are pressing the shaft in blind. It
is so tight , that there is literally no exposed shaft. Get a center
punch and dimple the shaft end on either side of the key way. This
will prevent the key from sliding back as you press in the shaft.
