shallow vs. deep draft

Posted by d1363us (D1363@…>)

I am looking at several F-38s. The one that I likew the best has
shallow draft 4’6". Does anyone have ideas or experience in
comparing there models vs. the 6’ draft?
Thanks

I sail an F36 with a shoal draft and am very satisfied with the performance. It points well and is very stable. I am cruiser and do not race, but I often am out on Lake Michigan with many other boats and I generally point as well as any of them.

Best of Luck with your search!

The two keels are constructed differently. The shoal is encapsulated, and the
deep is not. I believe that Practical Sailor prefers the encapsulated, but my
surveyor preferred the deep draft. I bought the deep draft, and do believe it
has some performance advantage. It depends on your sailing. Here on Naragansett
Bay, the Southwesterly prevailing winds mean that you are going straight upwind
or down a great deal of the time. If I were in a different situation, I might
not care as much about the few degrees. Either choice, they are fine boats.

Hello again, Darrell. I was hoping to find a deep
draft, being here in the Pacific Northwest. Did (Brian
Guptil’s previously named “Neried”, now: Sparrow). I
have also taken a friend down to Anacortes to look at
that beautifuly found shallow drafted 36/38 you
mentioned. “Dreamcatcher”, isn’t it? It is fun to
note, on whichever coast, that most Freedom owners say
10 knots and above is where they just start to wake
up. So that is perhaps a given, draft choice
regardless. What I do notice on beloved Sparrow (deep
draft) is how brilliantly she seems to stay in the
groove no matter what is hitting us.
I’ve only owned a boat of my own now for a little
under a year; I’m not sure what the correct term may
be. But we have hit some tough weather, including in
racing conditions, and this deep drafted boat just
seems to effortlessly head where you’d expect her to,
track obediently, and take up the next steady course
quickly. If I hadn’t raced other boats, I’d think it
was me. It isn’t. Brilliant designed balance and no
accident, I’m guessing. Hats off to TPI and Mr. Mull.
On the other hand, even here in these cold deep
waters, having three feet of underbelly plus six feet
three inches more of keel is an important training
issue. First night on anchor, we grounded despite my -
I thought - careful calculations. My seventeen year
old worried that we would drop the keel. Not on these
babies. Still, not something you’d like to routinely
experience. If you want those charming close-in,
hardly need to do any rowing, island anchorages,
shallow draft could be alluring. I’m resigned to a
steadily increasing upper body strength…
all the best, JaciMac

Darrell-
I have a wing keel F38, 4 foot draft. Very stiff, and I honestly wouldn’t know it was a shallow draft boat if I didn’t know it was a shallow draft boat…
I had a deep draft (5’9") Bristol 35.5 before and, while they are different boats, rigs, hull forms, etc., my Freedom 38 tracks and points as well. When I was looking to buy an F38 last year I was told that the deep draft would have a “slight edge” over the wing keel, but not very noticeable. Interestingly, I was told the wing was preferrable to the 4’6" shoal version. I guess if I could “afford” the extra couple of feet I would opt for the deep draft anytime, but I have no regrets.
