simple question

Posted by tlynchlaw (pass@…>)

My batteries are nearing the end of their life and I’m not sure I want
to keep the charger on them this winter. I run a 130 watt
dehumidifier on the boat to keep the chill out, but otherwise it is
not heated. Do I risk freezing the water in the batteries if I don’t
charge them constantly?

I’ve considered removing them from the boat, but I may want to keep
some charge on them from time to time in order to make sure the bilge
pump will run if needed.

A deeply discharged lead acid battery can indeed freeze solid. According to one source, a battery 50% discharged will freeze at 5 degrees.

If you give the batteries a charge once a month, that will do.
