I mounted the SS above the chart table, in a cabinet that I had made… I use
the running
backstay on the port side as and antennae. The antennae tuner is mounted under
the
deck in the head storage locker. The tuner is connected to the antennae through
a water
tight deck fitting. The copper foil ground for the antennae runs from the tuner
to the floor
boards back and fort above the bilge. The most important thing for the radio is
the
ground. The boat yard that installed the radio left out the ground and needless
to say the
radio did not work.

I am about to replace my SSB antenna, one way or another.
I had a miniature Outbacker SSB antenna (really made for jeeps in
Australia, I believe) on my transom. A small bracket pushed it a a
couple of feet aft of the transom and kept it out of the way of the
transom. Unfortunately, it didn’t keep it out of the way of the
mizzen sheets during a gybe, and the antenna is now at the bottom of
the sea.
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it wasn’t. I didn’t
feel it worked too well, even before it sank.
I was planning to use the port running back for my next effort, but
then someone asked me: why not just put in a separate antenna
running down from the top of the mizzen to the toerail, just a little
in front of the running back. Then you won’t have to worry about
allegator clips or other removable connections. You could even use
the SSB and the port running back (as a running back) simultaneously!
It made sense to me, but is there something I’m not thinking of?
