I agree. May take a little adjusting of the lazy jack tension also helps to
ease the sheet so as the wind shifts the sail can stay centered. Also some
care when furling the sail so the batten is centered over the boom can help.
I usually head into to the wind, watch the sail and raise the first part
very fast if it its centered so it doesn’t flutter and snag. With the sheet
loose I’ve done this without being head into the wind as well.

Subject: Re: [freedomyachts2003] Small Batten
Kevin,
Don’t do it !!! When you raise the sail, be headed dead into the
wind and raise the sail quickly when the batten is between the lazy
jacks. All you need to do is work on your technique. If you remove the
batten, the top of your sail will flap incessently and you’ll lose
performance. You can do it !
By the way, we sailed Sat. in 25Kts. First time I reefed the
main. Still cranked along at 6.5 K on a beam reach. What fun…
Good luck,

Hi,
I took the F32 out last weekend with the family. Winds were 8-10 knots.
I had a heck of a time raising the mainsail. The top (small) batten
kept getting caught up by the lazy jack system. That is the only one
that seems to cause problems, so I am thinking of just removing it.
Thanks for your thoughts.
