Small Batten

Posted by Kevin Taylor (kevin683@…>)

Hi,

I took the F32 out last weekend with the family. Winds were 8-10 knots.

I had a heck of a time raising the mainsail. The top (small) batten
kept getting caught up by the lazy jack system. That is the only one
that seems to cause problems, so I am thinking of just removing it.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Kevin,
Don’t do it !!! When you raise the sail, be headed dead into the
wind and raise the sail quickly when the batten is between the lazy
jacks. All you need to do is work on your technique. If you remove the
batten, the top of your sail will flap incessently and you’ll lose
performance. You can do it !
By the way, we sailed Sat. in 25Kts. First time I reefed the
main. Still cranked along at 6.5 K on a beam reach. What fun…
Good luck,

Kevin –
I would strongly recommend you keep the
top batten in as you will lose the integrity of your sail shape.

When putting the mainsail on the mast at
the beginning of the season, liberally spray SailKote on every sail slug as you
feed it into the mast. It will make raising the sail much easier and allow you
to get passed the lazy jack with a swift pull of the halyard when raising the
sail. Make sure the boat is head to wind – very important with a full
batten main.

Good luck,

Milo

I agree. May take a little adjusting of the lazy jack tension also helps to
ease the sheet so as the wind shifts the sail can stay centered. Also some
care when furling the sail so the batten is centered over the boom can help.
I usually head into to the wind, watch the sail and raise the first part
very fast if it its centered so it doesn’t flutter and snag. With the sheet
loose I’ve done this without being head into the wind as well.

If you keep the boat headed into the wind you won’t have that problem.
A rigid vang will give you added flexibility of being able to not rely
so much on the lazy jacks. Just be sure to mount it with a proper
collar on the mast.

I solved this problem by using hard vangs, and leading the jacks forward on
the boom, tucking the jacks under a cleat I fastened to the underside. After
making sail,I cast them off and procede as before. The vangs support the
booms. Been using this for 6 years without a problem. Garhauer made the
vangs and the mast collars for a VERY good price. I can be off the wind by
30 degrees and still make sail.

Posted in this mess last fall was a pic of a homemade gizmo to carry a can of sailkote up the mast so the sailtrack can be lubed from ther deck. I made one ,and it works like a charm. When my PC crashed I lost the pic, otherwise I’d post it. Worth the while making it over the winter. The cost was less than $10. If someone has the pic, praps they would post it.

Kevin

I had the same problem when I first started sailing my 35. The harkin
website has some directions on using shock cord to pull the lazy jacks
forward when released, but I just lengthened the line on the lazy jacks, so
I could fully release them just before I raise the main. It works like a
charm. Once the main is up, I retighten the lazy jacks.
