I am going to bite the bullet and install built-in speakers in the
cockpit of my F30. Does anyone have any recommendations on placement

Mark,
Place speakers and stereo away from navigation- and transceiver
equipment to prevent noise. Use screened wire to the speakers to keep
noise inside the wire. Try to prevent to saw large holes in your
cockpit walls; speaker covers are never watertight.

As far as I am concerned (ex-submariner) holes in the hull or cockpit wall are
NOT good. But only if you must then do it with care. There are several super
small speaker systems that have waterproof enclosed speakers(Bose for one)that
require no holes(well almost no holes)and are bracket mounted. When I say almost
no holes, you will need two very small holes for the speaker wire connections.
I would use a jack system since they can be plugged when not in use. These jack
holes are less then 1/4 of an inch and are a lot smaller then the 2 to 3 inch
hole requirements to mount the speakers permenently. Options … your choice.

You’re right Herm, shielded is the word in English; we use it here as
well, as in UTP. I translated literally from my native speech
(=Dutch).

Don forget that speakers have rather strong magnets.
Before cutting holes, place speakers as near as possible to intended location, move them around while watching the compass. After instillation, also check if playing music disturbs the compass as well.

Here is a link for you to look at for a visual idea on the speaker project…although this site is mainly for Catalinas it has some very usefully project and all being backed photos. The best project on this site is on the interior plumbing project using pipe which is now the choice of ABYC or whatever acronym it is.
