Hello everyone,
I am preparing my Freedom 21 for a big adventure. I previously sailed my Moore
24 from
San Francisco to Hawaii as part of the Single Handed Transpac and now I am
preparing to
repeat the journey on the 21. As part of this project, I am in need of 2
back-up spinnakers.
If anyone has a spare or is not using theirs, I would be happy to convert them
into cash.

OK so my previous experience was in 2004 when I sailed to Hanalei bay in 15
days, 12
hours. It was a lot of time to be alone, but it was really liberating and
amazing. The first
3 days we had a gale out from the Gate and I spent most of that time chasing
water
around the bilge with a bucket as the boat was so healed over that the bilge
pump was
useless. Te rest of the trip was fairly uneventful and I was able to fly the
spinnaker under
autopilot for 7 days straight. Hanalei Bay was beautiful.
Last year I sold my Moore and bought my 21, now named Highland Fling. I now am
yearning to go back to Hawaii. I have built 2 carbon fiber spinnaker poles for
the gun
mount, as well as a CF gun mount around a pvc tube. The rudder I am building is
also out
of Carbon over Corecell 550 foam templated out to the specs of a mini transat
(but
enlarged to the same wetted surface as the original. I am going to put on a
mast head
spinnaker along with 2 running back stays for lighter air. I am going to fair
the keel. I
have a new main and jib from Haarstick. I am building a windvane to fit on the
rudder that
will drive most of the time. I also have 2 autohelm 2000 tillerplots as back
up. I will e
running a SSB and 100 W of solar panels. All pretty much the same stuff as for
the Moore.
The cool thing about the Freedom is that the gun mount rig will allow me to get
sleep
without fear of spinnaker wraps. So I need to do the qualifying 400 mile run
this summer
and then the race is next summer.
So this is my project. Any help or advice would be appreciated. George

George, Could you tell us more about carbon fiber spinnaker poles.
What materials were used, cost, and construction techeniques? I would
like to make a carbon fiber pole for my F_25.

Hi James,The first pole I built came from Boat Builder Central: http://www.boatbuildercentral.com/products.php?cat=36 This kit comes with 2 layers of tubular glass and 1 laver of fiber. These socks are applied over a steel pipe with pipe insulating foam over it and then wetted out with the supplied 2 part epoxy. I started with fiberglass tape and reinforced the area of the gun mount and hen layed the tubes. I didn’t like the kits unidirectional carbon fiber and had trouble with keeping the fibers aligned because, even though they were in a net of stretchy material, there were snags and the end result was worse than a run in a stocking. So I did my best to get the fibers to lay straight, but I was not happy structurally, so I contacted Aerosleeve and got 4 yards of their 4 " CF http://www.aerosleeves.com/4_Carbon_Fiber_Sleeving_p/v56l400r.htm . This worked very well. The resulting pole weighs 4 lbs and is 2.5" in diameter. I made the difference up by epoxying on a piece of 2.5 " pvc and bevelling its edges so it would slide in well to the gun mount. The second pole is constructed in the same manner but using only Aerosleeve product and West Epoxy. I chose to vacuum seal using releasing fabric, breather fabric, a food saver vacuum and a long roll of food saver bagging material. This allows excess epoxy to be removed. Note: If you use peel ply release fabric (I ordered from West Marine), wear a respirator when peeling as here is much small particulate epoxy dust that is aerosolized. Second Note: Use the peel ply like a sandwich i.e. Breather on the bottom, then a sheet of peel then the pole, a sheet of peel and then more breather. This will allow you to actually peel. If you wrap it around the pole or back on itself it will be a long and frustrating peeling process. Hope this helps. Oh so cost: the original kit was $200 and the extra aeroleeve was $100. The extra glass tape was 35 and there was plenty of epoxy included in the original kit. Foam $5, steel pole $25. Gloves, cups, mixing rods $10. Therefore 12 ft CF pole custom reinforced before painting: $375. Please promise to enlarge the scuppers and seal the cockpit storage
bin - I want to hear how it went.
The mast base should also be upgraded - there is probably only a
single slice of plywood inside the tube at the base.
I just posted a reply to someone else. Consider a turning spit - by
aligning the support wire just beneath the pole bearing you should be
good. I tried my spinnaker as a blooper and it is a blast of FUN and
POWER when I could keep it full (pretty narrow range as it is stock
symmetrical shape).
