Has anyone installed an ssb radio on a Freedom-as in direct knowledge? Someone told me about a friend that had done it using a 20 foot whip antenna. Any tips, ideas etc would be great. Thanks. Laurie&pat
Don’t get soaked. Take a quick peek at the forecast with theYahoo! Search weather shortcut.

I had an old Icom ssb rig installed by the PO when I bought my F33 cat
ketch. I never used it cause the antenna tuner was defunct (the PO
installed the tuner ABOVE deck level!). I used the antenna instead with
my Lowe 150 SSB receiver to receive weather faxes while sailing
offshore. This worked well. The antenna was an isolated wire which lead
from the starboard bulwarks to the mizzen top. The foot of the antenna
was situated about 2-3ft in front of the mizzen at deck level, just
enough that it doesn’t get entangled with the main boom and lets the
mizzen wishbone boom swing out to starboard approx 100-110 degrees.
Hope this helps a bit.
Greetings

My Freedom 40 CK also uses a long wire antenna from the top of the mizzen mast to the starboard rail. Bungee cord is used at the rail to provide flexibilty when the mizzen mast bends to leeward. I thought about switching to a 20 ft whip also, and install it just forward of the mizzen mast, and aft of the main wishbone. I need to research what effect, if any, the carbon fiber mizzen mast might have on the signal.
