Staysail photo

Thanks for that Thomas. To give proper credit, the photo was taken by Greg
Doppman,
an astronomer currently residing in Chile. It was a September day in San
Francisco Bay.
I was heading NE, toward Angel Island. We had just left the St Francis YC
docks, after
attending the SF Blues Festival. Great day.

I have several additional pictures at

There is a GREAT photo of Ketch 22 under mizzen staysail on the Yahoo site.

Tom,
I have been meaning to ask you for some time how you keep the mizzen sheet from eating the back of your bimini.

It isn’t a problem, although I looked at the picture and it does appear to rub.
It’s an optical illusion though. When the mizzen boom is parallel to the
longitudinal access of the boat, there is about 18 inches of clearance between
the mizzen sheet and the aft edge of the bimini. In a beam or broad reach (when
the sheet is eased out considerably as in the picture), the sheet does rub on
the bimini framework, but it rubs on the stainless steel framework, not the
bimini canvas. The bimini frame is smooth enough that there is no wear
associated with it. I sailed to Hawaii last summer (from San Francisco), and
the only chafe I had was on the first reef in the mainsail where it exits the
main boom, and the mainsail boom vang. All the running rigging on the mizzen
showed no sign of abnormal wear.

I have more trouble with the boom rubbing on the top of the bimini. I have had
to put leather strips on the top side of the bimini canvas, where it rides on
the bimini SS frame. The boom rides on the leather when the sails are dropped
and - without the leather, will wear through the canvas in a few hours.

I’d guess by your email address that you live in and around San Diego. Where
do you keep your boat?

Thanks, Tom.
I keep L’Audace at Sun Harbor Marina in San Diego Bay.
