Hi all. Didn’t have time to deal with repacking the stuffing box on my Freedom
33. Got a
quote for one hour ($90) from my marina and a bill for $300. Before I make a
knucklehead
out of myself by jumping up and down in the office, can anyone think of a reason
why that
job would take 3+ hours? Is there anything wildly unusual or difficult about it
on this boat?
Thanks for the feedback.

Because the word marina or boat is attached to the job. If you stuffing box requires pulling the shaft to do a proper job then that is the whole battle. It took me after 20 years just about 6 hours to get the flanges apart with the rust,e tc and then I still had to hire the “marina” to pull the flange since I did not have big enough tools to break the 20 year weld. Actually if your shaft has to come out then $300 is a little high but not bad. And my knuckles can attest to that.

I have an Freedom 40 CK, 1981, and there should be no reason to pull your shaft to repack the stuffing box. Typically, all you need to do is loosen the lock nut, unscrew the front part, remove old packing from the front part, cut new packing and install. Unless your lock nut is frozen in place and you cannot unscrew the packing gland, it takes me about one hour start to finish. As part of your routine maintenance, always apply a little grease to the threads to keep the corrosion at bay.

I think they started to work on your boat an hour before lunchtime.
And of course, they just did not make it to finish the job before
lunch. And of course they had to hire a carpenter because there was a
piece of wood in the vicinity of your packing gland.
I agree with Jay that it’s a job that can be done in an hour,
provided you’re able to loosen all nuts. If everything is glued
together by time and if the packing has gotten hot because of over
tightening in the past, and has eaten into the shaft, three hours is
not unfair to get everything done.
