Stupid mystery clear-coat over my Awl-Grip. Help, please! (tech)

Posted by Jacqui MacConnell (jacimacc@…>)

Got this large 'n beautiful boat. Time for touching up
her hull. Oops, say the yards. What is this clear
stuff flaking off all over your nice dark flag blue
hull? Whatever has happened to annual waxing and
buffing? Somebody’s once brilliant idea (NOT the fault
of honored prior owner, BG) for never having to wax
again?

So what may this cr—=p be, and how might we get it
off’n mah boat? So we can redo it the proper way.

Please be kind mates, and offer under 20K per
suggestions. Thank you most sincerely. Santa is
bleeding.

Suggestions about what it might have been. Or how to
remove it and get back to the pure Awl-Grip very
appreciated. Ever seen anything like this anywhere?
I’m thinking someone “painted” the hull with it once,
hoping to save on annual waxing. But now, yikes! Do
not try this on YOUR boat.

It may be improperly cured clear awl-grip (sure it’s awl-grip and
not Imron? Mine got imron’d and clear-coated.) It’d make sense for
there to be several layers of clear-coat over your lovely blue, and I
honestly don’t know how those outer layers hold up to UV, etc.

It’s been a while since I’ve done that kind of finish work, but your
best (and perhaps only) solution may be to wet-sand the hull down
to the blue, and then probably either re-clear coat it (not a bad
idea) or start laying in the wax. A guy that I road-ride with gave me
the name of a system that was compatible with Imron and Awl-grip. If
you’d like, I can forward you the information.

Yes please. If it is compatible with either Imron or
Awl-Grip, that’s a benefit. Pretty sure I once saw old
literature and a receipt on board by first owner
that implied Awl-Grip. Can’t now find that document.
Maybe it is wishful recollecting.

Sir Saint Edwards at TPI says no boats went out of
there in anything other than antive white (or beige)
hulls, so it wasn’t TPI’s doing.

What would be FABULOUS is to figure out precisely
what this now-flaky clear coat was, and that there is
some nifty removal product, tailor made. And use it.

Otherwise it may be as you suggest. An overall wet
sanding. Sigh.

J.
The Former
Owner’s Former Owners, thought it would be a brilliant idea to clear-coat
the boat. It was to give it a “deep” blue look. Personally,
I would go with Paint as, or when needed as clear tends to yellow. So
Sparrow has a urethane clear coat on it, and I thought it was over gell, not Awl-Grip.
Seaview may have records on “Freedoms Child” and I do not think it
was factory.
