Hello,
We purchased a Freedom 30/32 last year and are trying
to determine how to fix a problem it appears to have had
for some time. The scupper in the hood into which the
companionway overhead hatch slides fills up with water
and then drips down on the cabin sole. This always happens
on the port side of the boat and had caused a black stain
on the galley floor. We have sanded and revarnished the
sole this spring so the stain is gone but we need to address
the cause.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any recommendations
on how to best correct this? Thank you!

On my C&C, I had a similar problem. In order to “fix” the issue, I would had to have ripped off the entire hatch hood (At least 50 screws, not to mention all the time to re-bed, etc.
Sooooooooooooo…
I took the low tech method. I bought a canvas sunbrella tarp (had it made to size, grommet in every corner for the bungee cords), and I just use it as a cover to make sure water just doesn’t get in. It has the secondary benefit of partially protecting my hatch boards from the sun.
As long as the cover is on, I no longer get leaks.
Cost of the custom canvas, $40
Cost of the stainless bungees, $20
Not having to rip off the companionway cover, and getting to sail instead, $priceless$…

A friend with the last 28 built had a cover made for the companionway.
Sunbrella, it snaps all around and keeps water off the hatch. At a mooring
and with the dodger up, it’s should no longer be a problem.

If the 30 is the same as the 36, here’s what I found. The Seahood is
secured by 7 screws. Remove that and pick up the hood and you will
find the hatch sliding in a C shaped channel. When working properly,
the water hits the plexiglass slider and flows to the channels where
it is supposed to drain out the open end and through the scuppers in
the hatch compartment. I found a couple of problems. The rails were
not bedded well, and the channels were blocked at the forward end,
causing the water to overflow the rails. Also, if the Seahood and
rail screws are not bedded properly, you will leak water into the
cabin top core, causing further problems.

See the photos section for a picture of rotten core in an F36
companionway slider cover (photo #47/47). If you have a leak, you
most likely have damage also. It seems leaks become apparent AFTER
the core is saturated. Pull the cover and check the screw
holes. If the balsa core is rotten, you may have problems with leaks
into the glass work that forms the sides of the Slider “box” which
in turn leaks into the cabin top core.
