Hi Max,

Pleased to see a site set-up specifically for F21’s. I’m a professional engineer running my own company from home specialising in technical sales & marketing in the advanced composites materials technology sector. I bought an F21 as it suits my needs perfectly being a boat one can sail single handed and with less than enthusiastic or less than fully capable crew without any stress or disharmony. This is my first season sailing the F21 - hence no backlog of sailing stories (yet).

I sail a UK built trim lifting keel version of the F21 - she is called DAYDREAM (sail number 205) and was built in 1989 by Freedom Yachts Ltd in the UK. My wife & I sail her on Lake Ullswater in the English Lake District. Generally we just cruise the lake but occasionally we join in the races at the Ullswater Yacht Club.

I love the ease & simplicity of handling the F21 - she is virtually a “big dinghy”. I like least the original engineering of the twin lift keel arrangement - however I have now re-engineered this making it much easier to examine & change the two lifting lines without dropping the keels out of the boat. If any other owner of a similar boat want information on the modification Ii can write it up and provide sketches?

You know you own a Freedom 21 when in a big blow other boats are too scared to hoist spinnaker & you pop up the spinnaker & surf past them.

Welcome to the Freedom 21 group. Judging from the number of people
who immediately signed up, it appears that there has been a need for
this group for some time.

I live in Rochester, NY which is located closer to Niagara Falls
than to New York City.

Your boat is beautiful. Please post your photos of it to the Yahoo
group and send them to me directly. Yahoo compresses uploaded
photos and the photos I add to the Web site will not be as
compressed.

I just purchased my boat last weekend through eBay and won’t take
possession until next weekend. Because the boat has not been used
for 4 years, there will likely be a great deal of work to be done to
bring her back to life. More than two decades have passed since I
sailed a boat on my own. I hope sailing is like riding a bicycle—
something you don’t forget.

Please do send me your keel modification drawings and I will add
them to the new Freedom21 Web site. The new site is online, but I
don’t want to hand out the URL until I have some content published.
Your engineering modifications and notes would make great content.

Max, et al,

I’m a court reporter in Durham, NC. I bought my Freedom three years
ago after a long absence from sailing–since I was in the Navy. My
boat is a 1985 Freedom 21, fixed keel. It has no name. My wife
suggested “No Tipping,” but that’s not going to work. I race the boat
every weekend on a lake in Indiana (Brookville Lake). I have a home
close to that lake. I plan to bring my Freedom to NC soon. There’s a
big lake near–Kerr Lake. The sailing season up north ends the 2nd
week in October. A time of mourning for us all. I also have an
International 210 Olmypic class boat. I bought the 210 to race
against the J-24s because the F-21 wouldn’t cut it except with the
wind at my back. Photos are under “files” on the other Freedom site.
Max, feel free to move things from there to here. BTW, is there a
spell check some where?

Allen,

Please visit http://www.freedom21.info and tell me which boat is yours
under the files section and I will label the photos accurately.

The way that I spell check my messages is to write them in MS Word and
then copy and paste them into the Yahoo edting box.

As you might guess, sailing season ends even earlier here in
Rochester, NY. A few hardy souls still go out, but most have their
boats wrapped in white plastic.

Since I have just bought my Freedom 21, I plan on sailing it until the
lines ice up. :slight_smile:

It is nice to have a discussion
group/website dedicated to Freedom 21’s. I am a Technology
Coordinator at Newport City Elementary School
in Newport, VT and have been sailing since 1989.

I purchased my 1983 Freedom 21 three years
ago from friends who wanted a larger boat and I actually was looking for a
smaller easier to handle boat. Before I purchased my Freedom, I owned a C&C
Mega 30 which I purchased as a fixer upper but never had time to make all the
necessary repairs/improvements. My Freedom has a fixed keel and I have not made
any major modifications to it other than installing cam cleats for the staysail
sheets along with working instruments.

I sail on Lake
Memphremagog which is 26 miles long
and stretches from Newport, VT
to Magog, Quebec
Canada. I not
only cruise but also race. We have two length of the lake regattas where we
sail from Magog to Newport back to Magog and
another where we sail from Newport to Magog back
to Newport. Our
club also has Sunday afternoon fun races where a group of us sail around buoys.

I really like how easy it is to sail the
boat single handedly and people constantly are impressed with the ease of raising,
lowering and jibing the spinnaker.

You know you own a
Freedom 21 sailboat if you are not afraid to raise your spinnaker in howling
winds. I did this not long after I had the boat and quickly was
overpowered due to a sudden shift. Nothing like being heeled way over,
especially in front of the lakes tour boat with everyone watching.

I have attached 4 photos
of my boat under sail. The one with the where I was sailing next to a much
larger boat was in the annual Magog-Newport-Magog Regatta where I took first in
my class and 6th overall.

My wife (Tamara) and I (Richard) purchased this past July a 1984
F21. We wanted a small sailboat both could be fast to prep for
sailing as well as fun to sail. What a great boat our F21 is–we
simply remove the mainsail cover, toss the docklines and off we are.
We are sold on the ease of handling and performance of the unstayed
rig and her slipperly hull shape. We like to sail in the evenings
after work as well as on weekends. Since we live on a canal off the
intracoastal waterway here in Florida we have the boat docked behind
the house.

As far as our backgrounds are concerned, Tamara and I sailed our
first boat (a 37 foot Searunner trimaran) from San Francisco across
the Pacific to New Zealand and Australia from 1985 thru 1988. We are
now again preparing to head off in a bit over a year in our current
sailboat, an Amel Super Maramu. Preparing our bigger sailboat for
sailing takes time (and I’ve always got projects underway preparing
her for cruising), and her 6’8" draft is a bit much here in Florida
within the Indian River Lagoon for sailing. Hence our decision to
get a little daysailer like the F21.

We haven’t named our F21–yet. We have given her a new topside paint
job using the two part LPU Perfection paint from Interlux (2 quarts
did two coats), and a new bottom job with Micron CSC black (one
gallon did two coats). Our F21 came with a custom built trailer.
We put the small 2hp Honda outboard on her, which moves her along
just fine.

Our boat came with a spinnaker, but no dousing sleeve. Can someone
give me the dimensions and details for this sleeve so I can build
one?

We are business owners of Clipperton Company–manufacturers of a
particular style of shower curtain rings.

My name is Dmitry, I work in maritime industry, currently for a
container shipping company, doing vessel operations. Decided to buy a
small sailing boat together with a friend. Something easy to maintain
and sail single-handed. First idea was to get Pierson Ensign since
there is a fleet of them in the area that races every week. Than our
budget became an issue and I started looking for other ideas. Our
Freedom popped up on EBay. I did a little research and became really
interested. It matched all our requirements. Well… we won the
auction
Even though I am a little bit superstitious I renamed the boat. Did
it according to the tradition with a little ceremony. Now its name
is “Baltika”
We got the boat in April in NJ and sailed it to Brooklyn. Came out at
least 2-3 times a week. Did not get a chance to do an overnighter yet.
I raced the boat a few times but due to inexperience did not do well.
So we mostly cruised and went fishing a few times.
Now my friend moved to Panama so I get to take care of the boat by
myself. Like everything about it except the upwind performance.
