Tiller Winter Storage

Sounds like a nice job Peter!

Emmylou will be spending the winter in the water. I will take the tiller off and was thinking of leaving it in the cabin. But then I thought perhaps it would be better off back in my garage. What does everyone else do? what are the optimal winter storage conditions?

Bring it home and preserve your hours of work.

My New England (Boston, MA area) winter storage practice for “Blue
Merle”:

I always took the rudder off (with the tiller) and brought it home
for the winter. The outboard rudder was in the way of my winter
cover technique anyway. So it was good to bring it home.

Additional note: The boat sat for 10 years in a boat yard before I
acquired it. The rudder and tiller were attached all during that
time. Results:
1.) the tiller was only good for firewood.
2.) some water had managed to leak down inside the rudder (probably
through the bolt holes for the tiller) and then froze at the
bottom. This resulted in a minor split/separation at the bottom
edge of the rudder. It was a minor repair but is shows the damage
that ice can do.

Hi Sean. I think suspending the tiller from silk strings in a humidor
might be ideal (heh, heh, little joke there.)

Interesting that you’re leaving Emmylou in the water. Will you use
any kind of protection above the water line? The expletive-deleted
guy who was supposed to shrink-wrap “Graceful Rose” has ignored her
for two months and in addition to being covered with bird stuff, she
has also had ice form along the companionway track in a way that
allowed rain to get into the cabin.

This winter I hope to replace the forward vent/ hatch, finish up some
electrical stuff, and study up on navigation and sailing. As well as
weekends I’d like to take a longer trip in the summer. I’m thinking
of sailing up to Portland, ME to visit my brother or down to the
southern shore of Cape Cod. Not exactly transat stuff, but should be
fun.
